Seargent Major Basil Plumley: A Great Soldier. RIP

From the movie and if he said it it probably fit his personality:

"If any of you sons of *****es call me grandpa I'll kill you"

LT. Col Moore: "I think you oughta get yourself an M-16."

Sgt Major: "Sir, if the time comes I need one, there'll be plenty lying on the ground"
 
The best line from that movie:

An incredible Man, Soldier, Leader, and Inspiration.
 
"We Were Soldiers" was a not bad movie - kind of cliched and a tad corny in some spots yet failry effective in my opinon, but the book it was based on: "We were Soldiers Once and Young" by Hal Moore and Joe Galloway was a great book and should be on every Lieutenants reading list. Many years ago LTG Moore came out to Hawaii and gave a really impressive talk to the Officers of the 25th ID . When you read the book you come away with the real appreciation for how important leadership was to the survival of the 1/7 Cav at LZ Xray and the lack of it contributed to the virtual annihilation of the 2/7 a couple of days later at LZ Albany. LTG Moore recognizes CSM Plumley and the Bn NCO's as key leaders in building a cohesive team before the deployment and instrumental in keeping the TF together during the battle.
Incidently- one of the heroes in that battle was a transplanted British born LT by the name of Rick Rescorla who- heroic in the ia Drang, demonstrated that heroism again on 9/11 in the Twin Towers when he was critical in getting virtually all of the hundreds of employees of Morgan Stanley out of the building, then went back up to ensure that everyone was safely evacuated. He was inside when the tower collapsed.

I thought Charley Galloway said it best in describing CSM Plumley: "Sam Elliot UNDERPLAYED him...he (Plumley) was FAR tougher!!!"

NPR's All Things Considered had a remembrance of Basil Plumley today. Joseph Galloway, the journalist who was present at the battle of Ia Drang Valley (Plumley handed him a weapon), is one of the speakers. The link below will be three minutes well spent. An irony of the title of Galloway and Moore's book, We Were Soldiers Once and Young, is that Plumley was 45 years old at the time.

(45 is a young puppy in the real scheme of things) Still a great Soldier. We were all Soldiers once and Young. Young isn't the term you can apply now.
