CVW/LOA

Can a candidate receive a CVW as well as an LOA or are they mutually exclusive?

They can receive both.

DD received a LOA but not an initiatial CVW. Contacted BGO and got admission to schedule CVW through BGO contacts. They can recieve both but if they don't get a CVW ask for one through your BGO. They may be able to get one scheduled. If not call Admissiions they might be able to set it up.

And as mentioned earlier, if you went to NASS, don't expect a CVW.

And as mentioned earlier, if you went to NASS, great, but I don't believe there is any connection between the 2. One is for recruiting purposes, the other is to expose desirable candidates to "real Mid life" and its crises.

Many NASSies are invited to CVW.

Both my sons got offered NASS (only one went), followed by them each receiving an LOA, followed by an offer of a CVW (neither went).

I had a candidate who attended NASS last summer, is already fully qualified, asked about a CVW and said that CVWs are NOT for candidates who attended NASS. I personally spoke with an Admissions Officer and got the same exact response -- candidates who went to NASS will not receive CVWs; are there exceptions? I'm sure there are; but Admissions will be applying general consistency to the above. Hence, why I say if you went to NASS don't EXPECT a CVW! If you get one (for some reason) great! However, if you call or your BGO comes back and says - denied - then you know why.

Whatever happen in the past is in the past, it isn't the same for this year.

So WP, you can believe what you want....but my information came from a first-hand source.

I went to NASS. Asked my BGO if there was any possibility that I could get a CVW. He said he'd talk to admissions. A week later I got a CVW. Not sure if my BGO actually spoke with admissions or if that made any impact.

As jadler said the past is the past and it may be different this year.

The Naval Academy Admissions Facebook page today announced a CVW this weekend, and said that any candidate who was interested and could attend should contact them today.

Went to NASS and received an invite to CVW. Already have my appointment. Should I still look into attending a CVW or if there is limited space should I bow out and leave the slot for someone else.

Your primary concern should not be for other candidates in the admissions process.

If you feel like you would benefit with a CVW, then take it. It's as simple as that. If you do not think it would be of much value to you - then don't. But do not let concerns for other candidates drive your decision.

A noble thought, however.

+1 to Memphis. To expand a bit, if attending a CVW will help you decide the Academy is the place for you, or perhaps that it's not the place for you, then definitely attend. If you have already decided to attend but you think it will give you some additional beneficial insights into Academy life, then attend. If none of these apply then offering to forego the CVW would be OK I would think.

I recieved both. Well, I asked for a CVW after my LOA and got it. In my opinion, CVW was a better experience than NASS.

Agreed, thoughtful, kind, but no need to try and influence or manage a process that is out of your purview.

Your case illustrates the primary purpose for CVWs, i.e. it is to provide an upfront opportunity for desirable candidates at various stages in the appointment process to "shadow" and observe "real life" at the Yard. This tactic is not merely to expose, evaluate, or encourage candidates, although they may well provide some some of each.

CVWs begin to move into the retention aspect of the admissions/appointment/acceptance/I Daying process. In other words moving beyond the "look at the cool uniforms, sailboats, and attractive location" and toward, "here's what the classes, chow, and chatter of daily life really look like." Sorta like moving from the starry-eyed status of first and early dates with your hottie toward asking and answering ... "If she asks me do I REALLY want to get engaged AND married to this old gal?"

Sorta lends a different image of "MOTHER B" doesn't it, especially when one begins to think about the "children?"

Ok, you may not want to take this metaphor too far or it may move from I Day/retention/"marriage" toward separation/"divorce" !

And the candidate was found sitting in the Chapel during his CVW confessing ... "But all I wanted to do was spend a weekend at the Yard, serve my country, and maybe learn to fly. I'm not ready to be a 'father'?!"

I rescind my earlier comments about CVWs not being offered to those went to NASS. Apparently, the candidate who initially requested a CVW and was declined, has now been offered one, even though the Admissions Counselor told me that CVWs weren't going to NASS-ers.....scratching my head.
