I have noticed several posts regarding LOA's from USNA (congratulations) and LOE's from USMA just curious is USAFA sending anything out? At summer seminar my DD was told there would be a small number of LOA's sent out but I am also hearing there will not be any sent. Her MOC panel interview is next week.

From what I've read, LOAs will be for recruited athletes only.

That would make sense michigander. If they are saying a small amount, and the AFA has historically been stingy regarding LOA's, that would basically equal recruited athletes.

I won't swear by it, but in yrs past the AFA has never topped more than 10% of the incoming class size, in other words if the class size is expected to be 1150, it would be @ 100 LOAs.

If class of 2017 is like class of 2016, only recruited athletes and those fully qualified with a principal nomination in hand can expect an early appointment. Our 2016 DS had a principal nom and received an appointment offer the first week of February. The majority were notified the later part of March.

Our C2C son (class of 2014) who was a recruited athlete (fencing) was fortunate to receive an LOA three years ago. The date on his LOA letter was November 10. I clearly recall that when we were on Christmas vacation he checked his application status online and it said "appointment offered". The date on his appointment letter that came with his "BFE" was December 21.

While the application process - and timing - may have changed over the past three years, I thought it may be helpful to know these dates just as a reference.

My son received one a couple of years ago and he was not an IC. Another young man from his HS received one last year (also not an IC). It seems they do indeed send them to non-athlete candidates. Frankly we were surprised he received one. He had already gotten a nomination for Annapolis, so we had to scramble to have our congressman's liaison go back to the committee and request that it be switched to USAFA. Thankfully, they were very willing to do that.

DS did not receive an LOA(recruited athlete), however with his Presidential nomination. He had his offer of appointment on October 31, 2011. He is happily a member of the class of 2016.

LOA's for other than recruited athletes WILL be given this cycle BUT BUT BUT...

DO NOT PLAN ON IT...the "Sir, you can't publish anything specific" word was simple: VERY VERY VERY FEW...(think less than 50 total).

Again, this cycle will be BRUTAL on the numbers because USAFA is still above their maximum of 4,000 cadets. SO...think 1,000 appointments for the class of 2017.

That may change...but right now...that's what I'd "guess" based on meetings I've been to.

Flieger,
How many cadets are currently in the Wing?

Ooh...I'm not sure to be candid. I knew a month or two ago but now...no.

The last number I saw was somewhere in the 4,140 or so range. But that could have changed and probably has.
