I was just wondering, is it possible for AROTC cadets to pursue a summer internship? Is there training over the summer that they need to attend?

The only required training for AROTC Cadets is LDAC that is during the summer after their junior year.

A few of my son's fellow cadets did internships during the summer after their freshman and sophomore year.

The summer after the sophomore year is usually when cadets are able to go to training such as Airborne, and Air Assult. Not every cadet will get selected to go to this training and it is not a requirement if they are selected. A couple cadets at my son's battalion passed on Air Assult to take a summer internship.

Thanks, Jcleppe. My DS had expressed an interest, but I wasn't sure of the summer commitments.
Good to know.

I'm not sure if Jcleppe is referring to the variety of internships for which MS3s get priority. Here is a link:

Jcleppe,

DS interned on the Hill at college, along with all of his friends in his program, feel free to pm me regarding any questions.

Usually done either before or after LDAC. CTLT and internships done at this time...Summer after junior year normally.

Forgive my ignorance, but does the student need to be under contract before competing for an AROTC internship? I understand the MSIII part, but unclear as to the contracting part.

I believe, by definition, an MS III is contracted. I'm not clear though if the programs are only open to contracted cadets. This would be a great conversation starter for a cadet to express interest in an internship with his cadre. Surely they will know the answer. It might vary by internship.

Thanks - I did not know that MS III indicated a contract. I thought it was simply third year AROTC!

There might be some exceptions but as a general rule all MS III and IV are contracted. You pretty much need to be contracted to do the Advanced Course. I gather in AROTC there may be some exceptions but I know in NROTC there are none.

kinnem is correct. Per AR 145-1, Chapter 3, Section V, we read

Section V
Contract and Agreement
3–40. Nonscholarship cadet
a. DA Form 597 will be completed by nonscholarship students enrolling in the ROTC advanced course (MS III). Completion by the student and the PMS or assistant professor of military science (together with the completion of DD Form 4-series) and execution of the loyalty oath (except students enrolled under para 3–29) enrolls the student in the advanced course.

DA Form 597 is the Contract.

I passed on CULP this summer to do an internship with DOJ. You can definitely do internships with ROTC

It takes an exception to policy for a non contracted cadet to go to any summer training. The Army is not going to send someone to this training if they haven't made a commitment and if they aren't on the payroll in most cases.

DS is a freshman in AROTC with a 3-year AD scholarship, so he would be contracted fall 2013. He just found out that the army is going to pay for spring semester (so his scholarship is now 3.5 years).

He had been assuming that since he was not contracted (not to mention being low on the totem pole as an MS1), his ROTC-related summer training/internship opportunities this coming summer were low to nonexistent.

Since he will now be on scholarship, does that change his chances? Any suggestions on ROTC internship or training opportunities the summer after MS1?
