Hi,
I'm a senior who has completed her nomination and Academy applications. Ohrah.

But, the other day, I happened to get the chance to speak to my BGO again when we met by chance. From what I understand, BGOs have some kind of thing they can use on the Internet to check the status of their applicants, and he told me that on mine, I'm guessing at some status box, there was a letter D, and when he clicked on it, it said something like deferral or deferment (it was a college fair, very loud and difficult to hear him). Again, as I understand it, I believe he said he found out it meant they were waiting for my grades from the first trimester of senior classes to come in. He said he'd never seen it happen.

So, my question is, how worried should I be? My grades are decent, as they've ever been, though I'm taking more AP classes this year. I'm worried that my admission to the Academy may depend on my grades for this trimester. Does anyone know anything about this?

I am definitely no expert or seasoned veteran of the process. All I can tell you is what I was actually told today by my BGO in an interview. He explained that deferred meant that one was not automatically considered academically qualified, but that additional information like a 7th semester transcript would be reviewed to see if you could then be deemed qualified. Basically, in short your numbers are not competitive enough for an automatic academic Q, but that you still have a shot if additional information can speak to your application in a positive way. Hope this helps.

I agree with Positivity. In particular, they're probably waiting to see how you do in those AP course. I don't think you need to be overly worried, but you do need to focus on your grades this semester especially in AP course. If any of those are AP Calc then especially focus there (without neglecting the others of course).

A deferral means the Admissions Board has initially reviewed your package but needs additional information before making a final decision. That info could include first semester grades, new ACT/SAT scores, etc.

Clearly, your next set of grades will be important. In particular, they may be looking for a grade in calc, chem or physics, especially if it's at an AP level. An "A" will obviously be great. A "C" will hurt.

Would it be advantageous or would it hurt to send in first quarter grades to USNA?

Are you asking in general or in regards to the OP? The OP won't have much choice. For others, if you're already qualified scholastically, it could help in securing an appointment if they are significantly better than your average GPA and/or if you've done particularly well in a course such as AP Physics or AP Calc. For most candidates already qualified, however, they are unlikely to make much difference.

Sorry for hijacking, but I'm just asking in general.

So if I'm already scholastically qualified, with an exceptional GPA, would it be beneficial to send in my 1st quarter grades if I've been doing really well in AP Calc?

It certainly won't hurt you to keep your file updated with new grades, athletic awards, Eagle badge award, etc. Keep in mind that in almost all instances all Admissions knows about you is what is in your file. If you don't keep it updated, who will? Comes under the general headings of Responsibility and Paying attention to detail. Best wishes to you.
