Am I Competitive?

Hey everyone!

So here's the thing:

I'm a current AFROTC cadet, but I am looking to receive and appointment to the USNA, and I was wondering if I was competitive.

In high school, I didn't have many impressive stats. My GPA was lacking. During my freshman and sophomore years of high school, I didn't really nail down the fact that my grades actually mattered. My junior and senior years however I had around a 3.7 (uw).

So basically, this is me on paper:

High School GPA: 3.383 (top 1/3rd in class)

College GPA (Mechanical Engineering Major) (Midterms): 3.6

ACT Scores: 25/28/29/33 (English, Math, Reading, Science) Respectively

Sports:
JV Basketball
Varsity Soccer (3 years) (2x All-Conference) (2x GK of the year) (MN All star team)
Varsity Football
Varsity Weightlifting
Varsity Math Team
Varsity Soccer (College)

Leadership:

Current AFROTC Cadet
Captain of Soccer team (high school)
Captain of Basketball team
Captain of Soccer team (club)
Performed more than 10 speeches in front of audiences (yay speech class)

Community Service:

Mission trip to New York
Nursing home volunteer
Feed my starving children volunteer
College move in day volunteer
Painted parks.
Basketball Concession stand volunteer

I know I still have to send an official transcript after my first semester of college to USNA admissions, but do I have a chance? I'm predicting to max out on most parts of the CFA. Even being accepted into NAPS would be awesome.

Thanks for any and all opinions!

I think if you keep up the 3.6 GPA this semester you have a fair chance. You certainly have the athletics and leadership. That assumes you're taking a fairly significant class load this semester including Calc, Physics and/or Chem.

HOWEVER... you need to retake the ACT and get those scores up. I believe they will still look closely at these. They're a red flag to me so I assume they'll be a red flag to the boards.

Good Luck.

kinnem,

I was hoping to take the ACT again, but I didn't know when my deadline was to submit my scores.

And I am currently taking in college:

Calc 2
Engineering Lab
Critical Reading/Writing
Aerospace Course
Philosophy

Not a bad course load, but not great either. The Philosophy is questionable but it is what it is. I don't understand why you didn't follow the guidance on courses to be taken when applying to USNA as a college student.

As far as the ACT I don't know why the deadline would be important. But you can find it out anyway by checking the USNA web site. I think its Jan 31 when your final package has to be submitted, but don't take my word for it. You're a big boy now! Get on it and check and then take the ACT as often as you can between now and then.

It was a part of my plan of study in AFROTC, there wasn't much I could change about it. My next semester consists of:

Multi-variable calc
Classical Physics
Programming
Engineering Lab
Aerospace course
English course

OK. Understood. I like this class load better, not that my opinion mattersin any way shape or form. Good Luck! :thumb:

This is a question more than a comment: Will the USNA Admissions committee see any grades from the 2nd semester classes? It seems they might have to rely only on 1st semester grades.

Kinnem, not sure how 2nd semester is much better. English is replace by Physics, but they are both on the recommended list of classes for college re-applicants: Calculus, Chemistry and/or Physics, English, History.

From the normal admitted students going into USNA, your ACT scores are a bit under par, but they aren't too bad. Your GPA should be a little higher, 1/3 of the class isn't competitive. Your athletic side is really strong, so that might even it out, but that doesn't mean it wont be hard. Athletic admissions are competitive.

P.S I'm curious, how does Varsity Weightlifting work?

English is still there. Philosophy is replaced by Physics. It's better in the sense that Physics is there. He had no science previously.

I'm sure you're correct that USNA will rely on first semester grades to make their decision, although they may ask to see the second semester grades. Most colleges want to see them and their acceptance (in theory) is based on continued good academic performance. I'm assuming USNA is the same, but it may not be.
