I have received a congressional nomination from Senator Webb of VA. I am very excited about this, I understand that the majority of appointments go out in March but will the fact that I have received my congressional nomination in November make it possible for me to receive an appointment earlier than this?

Thank you,
BRupert17

Yes.

Dad is correct you can get it earlier, BUT you need to understand the charging process.

They will give you a WCS, and to be charged to the source everyone on the slate MUST have a WCS too. This is one reason why the majority of appointments don't go out until March.

Do yourself a favor don't play Snoopy over the mailbox everyday between Thursday and Saturday. Expect March. Get your plan B in order now. Than your plan C.

Enjoy your sr. yr in hs., because you can't get those memories back.

We know you are anxious, but statistically only about 25% of all of the appointments occur before March. Start doing the math, place in LOAs and Principal nomes, the actual number of apptmts out of that pool of 25%, drops dramatically if you are not one of these 2 types. Maybe 15%. Now do some more math and realize they have about 4k+ with noms, 1300 get appts., if it is 15%, you are looking at 5% of the entire pool that hears before mass mailing March.

It is a very low number, hence, work on plan B, and C, while you enjoy your SR yr in HS.

Congrats!
I also got a nomination from Sen. Webb. I think that the appointments are made in march.

Pima is quite correct. Assuming you have your application 100% complete; you now have a nomination; and they've even figured out your weighted candidate score; how can they CHOOSE you to receive an appointment, when the rest of the individuals in your district/state/and nationally; have until the end of January to complete their application? In other words, they can't compare YOUR WCS to someone who doesn't have their score yet. See, you can get the nomination prior to finishing the application. That is quite common. If it wasn't, then the cutoff for finishing the application would probably be in december.

Now; there is of course exceptions to every rule and caveats. In this case, IF, and I say IF SPARINGLY, the senator or representative who gave you your nomination uses the "PRINCIPAL" method; whereby they declare YOU as their #1 PRINCIPAL Nominee; then the academy can most definitely give you your appointment early. Because if you're the PRINCIPAL, then the academy has NO CHOICE WHATSOEVER in you getting an appointment. (Assuming you are 100% qualified). But even then, they pay choose to wait. Because, if you have more than 1 nomination, even though one is a principal, they can guarantee you the appointment, but use one your other nominations so they can get someone from the slate you were the principal on to get another person in. The nomination process is very complicated, but there is a method to the madness. So if you have a principal nomination, (Which is not the norm for most MOC's), then the academy wouldn't need to wait to compare your score to others. But without a principal, they sort of can't compare you until everyone has their applications completed and have their scores.

To beat everyone at the pass regarding how they know if the MOC uses Principal. Read the fine print on their congrats letter. It typically will say the method they use, Principal, Prin/Alt., ranked, and competitive.

It is important to understand how this will impact you as Mike illustrated. The nom is great, but if the MOC does not use competitive, only Prin/alt, you might be immediately thrown into the National Pool if you are numbers 2-10.

We are not trying to rain on the parade. To get a nom in VA when there are probably 700+ applicants for 10 slots is a feather in your cap. However, before you start buying AFA sweatshirts, understand that only 1 out of those 10 can be charged to Webb.

Look at it this way...dj_dagger and BRupert17 both got a Webb nom. along with 8 others. We all know AT LEAST one of these 2 posters will not win Webb's nom. Only 1 can win it. It doesn't mean that they both won't be appointed.

It only illustrates why you apply for every nom possible.

It also illustrates why mass mailing March occurs.

Maybe our MOC is "non-typical" but last year my son's letter did not indicate this. We knew the MOC used a Principal/competitive method but the letter did not indicate this.

I don't know packer.

Our DS's 3 MOC noms stated the system they used. All of them used competitive.

How did you find out they used Principal?

We asked after I recognized a poster on here that said they received the principal nomination from our MOC.
