Will a LOA to another academy affect my USMA nomination?

Hey everyone,

I recently received a LOA to USNA. Will this affect my chances of receiving my first choice of getting a nomination to USMA? I received a LOE to USMA if that makes any difference.

On the flip side, will I still be able to secure a nomination to USNA? Although West Point is my preference, I would still be honored to attend the Naval Academy as well.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Hunter21,
Congratulations on your LOA to USNA and your LOE to USMA. The LOA will not have any impact on earning an Appointment to USMA.

It sounds like you are a highly qualified candidate and have worked hard to earn an LOA and LOE at both service academies.

Good luck!

The schools won't care so it won't affect your chances of USMA. The only snag I could foresee is that some MOCs will only offer an appointment to one or the other. If that's the case and you have to chose: go USMA. It's clearly your preference and I suspect the only reason you didn't get an LOA to USMA is that they're not giving LOAs this year. I expect if you get the nomination you'll get an appointment as long as DoDMERB goes/went OK.

Thank you for the quick responses! Hopefully, I will be able to get nominations to both. I'm medically qualified, so that front is all set.

I am aware of what a LOA is, but what is a LOE?

An LOE indicates the high level of interest from USMA and allows a candidate to spend an overnight visit with a current Plebe.

I hope this helps explain the Letter of Encouragement (LOE).

LOE?

When you attend SLS or if you ask for an overnight stay at WP you are approaching WP showing interest. An LOE, WP is asking you to spend some time there to see if you're interested.

There is a difference.

I have been reading around a lot, do you have to complete your portal within 45-60 days of opening it, in order to be considered for a LOE/LOA? Or did I misinterpret what I read.

Finishing Early

Last year when they had rolling admissions at WP, it was important to get your application finished early as possible. Every Tuesday, last year, the review board would gather and select who would receive an appointment. So your file could be reviewed as many times possible when completed early.

This year there are no rolling admissions and very few LOAs. Most appointments will have been made before the end of February. However, still get you file completed as soon as possible to show your desire to attend USMA.

One More Thing....

When you complete your file early, and before the deadline, you could receive additional awards. Still send those in to WP to be included in your file. this could help strengthen your WCS when selection takes place.

@tug_boat my application was finished on October 24th, and it was opened in mid-July. The only item that "isn't completed" is my college transcript. I assume I'm okay?

Look fine to me

I think you're on track. If there are things you can control, improve on them. Keep your grade up in college. Now is the difficult part, waiting for February.
