I was given a referred status. I think it is due to one low grade that I had during my junior year. My BGO told me that he put me on a list of "Blue Chip" candidates and that I will get a formal invite to an affair in my area. He also told me I can make my case directly to the Dean of Admissions who will be there. I am worried and have no idea what any of this means as far as me being qualified and accepted. Thanks for any input.

This is unusual. Do you mean "deferred" or "referred?" Never heard of candidates being allowed to "make my case directly to the Dean of Admissions." Is that what is meant by "referred?"

Or if you meant "deferred", I'm wondering if they are simply waiting for semester grades prior to evaluating your case. And I've never heard of BGOs being allowed to assess "Blue Chip" candidates. Did your BGO explain the meaning of that?

Let us know how your "case-making" goes. Seems you're breaking virgin ground on this one, and that if you're given an audience, only has upside for you. Good luck!

I mean deferred, or atleast that's what my BGO told me. I have no clue whatsoever as to what being a "blue chip" means or what weight that has in the process. I have asked for more infomation regarding what he said, and ment. However, I do think that your semester grade hypthesis is correct. I hope to have all A's and possibly one B in all AP/Dual credit classes. Hopefully this will speak positively to my qualification. Thank-you very much for your insight. I will posts updates as I hear more.

I think "blue chip" refers to the dinner to which you were invited. Evidently these are held in various areas around the country. See here for an example: http://www.usnaaa-ntx.com/article.html?aid=132
I would say this is quite good news.

That would be the one, actually. I live in North Texas. I would like to think it is good news, but I was deferred. I figured being deferred ment that I am floating somewhere between the average and exceptional appointee? I could very well be wrong. Thank-you very much for your input kinnem.

My DS received letter for "Blue Chip dinner" as well. Two days later he received a B.F.E. I would say there is a strong correlation with candidates attending the dinner and receiving an appointment. In 2016 52 candidates attended the dinner, 48 offers made, and 39 accepted.

My guess is they are just waiting on the semester's transcript to confirm your ready and that the one low grade was just that... one low grade and not a pattern. If you get a chance to talk to the Dean I would just share your concern about that grade and how you're doing academically now. I don't think you need to make a big deal of it.

Keep in mind my surmises and opinions and $5.00 will get you a latte at Starbucks.

Just curious as to how you found out you were deferred?

When I had my BGO interview he told me that he would be able to give me a status update within a week or two. I stayed in contact and he just let me know that I was deferred. He also told me the things mentioned above.

I will continue to update as I know more. I will defnitely do what I can at the function to try to positively impact the situation. I appreciate your feedback.

In my experience if the admission board defers a candidate it means that the application is generally not strong enough for an appointment, nor is it weak enough for a twe. They probably want to see 7th semester grades from HS.

If you don't mind me asking, what would the hypothetical resume possibly look like?

hypothetical

Hard to say. Try not to overanalyze things. A deferral is not necessarily bad news, the admissions board just needs more information, with USNA it's probably Math or Science in your first semester senior year HS.

I am very happy to hear that. Im in AP Physics and should finish this semester with a high B or low A. Im also in dual credit college algebra/trig with a high A. All else are As except for one possible B. My question, although vague and uncertain, is if 2 Bs would hurt me at this point? Belive me, I am striving to do the best I can, but an A may not be possible for certain reasons that I don't want to go into. Thanks nofodad.

2 Bs are not going to hurt you, especially if one of them is in AP Physics.

Cool beans.. AP physics is, in my opinion, the hardest hs class. It is also class that I feel has truly challenged me. I will be calling my BGO in about an hour to ask for clarification.

I just got off of the phone with my BGO and he said that my 7th semester grades would basically be a make or break situation. I just moved schools this year and he is stipulating that the board would like to see how I do and where my GPA will be in the new system. As far as the blue chip dinner goes, he said that I would be able to meet with several "head haunchos" and plea my case. He also said that getting an invite ment they atleast thought I might have a chance of being appointed. Looks pretty neutral at this point.

Well, you're the candidate, but I'd say this is far more than "neutral." In fact, more than most, it seems that your fate is fully in your own hands now. Study like there's no tomorrow! And make it happen!:thumb:

Be very careful on how you "plea" your situation. That also could make or break you in a positive or negative way. If the Dean of Admissions is there, he is a very smart guy and retired Navy Captain.

And one doesn't always = the other.:confused::rolleyes::eek:

This is wise counsel. No groveling. Remember what the end game is all about. And it's not admission to USNA. Good luck. This is a "man up" experience to test your mettle. :thumb:
