CFA Scores Question

Hey guys,

I'm preparing to take my CFA and I had a few questions. First, this is my current estimated score(from practicing)

BB: ~70'
Pull Ups: 0-1
Shuttle: ~7.0
Sit ups: 75
Push ups: 75
Mile: 6:50

I've been training (physically) very hard ever since started the application process for NROTC and the Academy. I was far from physically fit in my early high scholl career so I feel like im fighting an uphill battle. While I was visiting the USNA, an admissions officer told me that the emphasis is place on the push-ups, sit-ups and mile run.

So my qusetions,
1.) How do my scores look.
2.) I weigh 185, and seem to do fine in all areas of physical fitness except for pull ups. How much of a problem is this?
3.)I plan to take my first official test in December. My application will be complete and sent in early January(college Candidate), should I think about retaking it in the spring with slightly better results?

Thanks,
John

Well those pull ups will be a bummer
There was someone with an Letter Of Assurance and a nomination whine as a recruited runner with one pull up. ...but I think he ran a 4 minute mile.

Work on the pull ups

I agree with Vista. Get it to 5 at least for goodness sake. 12 would be better. Get a pullup bar and hang it from your bedroom door. Every time you go by, do as many as you can. Try negative pullups (lower yourself slowly). Better yet check this out: http://www.military.com/military-fitness/workouts/tips-for-better-pullups

The runtime may be borderlilne. Improve it if you can. Try doing sprint intervals. It seems counter-intuitive to improving your long distance run times but it works.

I can't speak to your other scores. Keep working at it. there is time.

Men should be able to do 5-8 pullups. The run time is OK, not great but OK -- be sure when you practice, you are doing it under real test conditions. Lots of folks are surprised at how tired they are when it comes to the run.

I would also improve your situps. 75 is ok but 85+ should be your goal (and not just saying that b/c it's my class year!)

I hope you are practicing the whole CFA per the instructions and not just the individual events. The cumulative nature of the test really affects the mile time. My son was just working on the events individually but I insisted he do one practice before taking the real one. He was astonished at how slowly he ran the mile in that first practice test. He refocused his training and did much better when he took it for real.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm taking practice tests and I'm working on my pull ups. problem is that it is a long term plan and im taking my frist CFA a week from today. Can I retake it before the deadline even if my application is under review?

Are you sure you want to risk taking the CFA before you are fully prepared?

Value of CFA

If one candidate gets a low but passing CFA does he get the same amount of WCS credit as a candidate who had a high CFA score? Basically is the CFA pass/fail?

I spent a great deal of time researching what makes up our Candidate Multiple. You might check out my post titled "Evolution of the Candidate Multiple", which offers great primary sources. Over half of your Candidate Multiple comes from your SAT or ACT math score and you class rank.

My best information indicates our CFA performance can add or subtract "RAB" points in 500 point blocks. "RAB" stands for Recommendations of the Admissions Board". Since a viable candidate typically has a Whole Person Score in the 65000+ range, a few RAB points for a great run or max pull ups is of minor importance.

Thanks

I appreciate the info. It seems like the deck is tilted against candidates who are good ( I am defining good as being close to last year's average sat scores),but not outstanding students, even if they are outstanding athletes and strong leaders. This process is so complicated!

It's been mentioned in other threads that CFA is pass or fail.
You are probably one of the few exceptions because you maxed out on pretty much everything else but the pull up.
Is this the same for all three SA's?
