DS is doing backflips! He just checked his portal and found that he has received a nomination! He has an LOA to USMA so he should be expecting the BFE soon? Or will he receive it at the end of February? He had his congressional interview on Nov 17 and his NJ Senatorial interview just yesterday! The nom is listed as SUPN08, is this even a nom related to a MOC? Thanks to all on this forum for your excellent advice, it really helped so much! We are going to Peter Lugers to celebrate!!!

Waiting on the BFE too!

My DS also has an LOA and received notification from MOC on Friday of his nomination! This is DS's 2nd time around... received USMA LOA and then appointment for class of 2016 and then was injured in a wrestling match. Just received notice that his waiver was approved in November and now the nomination is in place. With his LOA for 2017, he is a "GO"! Very excited and proud of his persistance in pursuit of his dream! Only thing we wonder now is when will the BFE arrive?

Arrival of the BFE depends largely on how quickly the MOC submits his/her slate to USMA. They have until Jan. 31 or, if they are leaving office, until Inauguration Day. Just b/c they notified your DS does not mean they've notified USMA.

Once USMA receives the slate, it probably takes a couple of weeks to process the paperwork and get it to you. At least that's how long USNA takes. So, any time between two weeks from now and early Feb.

These posts are confusing me - was told USMA is not doing LOAs this year - some have received LOEs, but understood no LOAs. Is this not the case or are you not quite correct - was also told USMA will not be doing any BFEs until end of Feb.

The Letter of Assurance (LOA) was developed as a tool to encourage candidates to complete their files early. Most cohorts are completing their files early – and the LOA has no longer been an effective tool for managing the class. Due to the competitiveness of recent classes and the high acceptance rates, we are sending LOAs to only a small cohort of candidates – those in the areas where we struggle to achieve our Class Composition Goals.

Sorry, previous post is quoted from USMA Admissions statement on change away from rolling admissions policy.

Allow me to explain DS's LOA...

My DS received an LOA for the Class of 2016 (last year's cycle), received a nom, received the BFE and accepted his appointment on December 2, 2011. On 12/17/11, DS dislocated his shoulder in a wrestling match and was subsequentially medically DQd. Waiver was NOT approved for Class of 2016 due to healing time from surgery prior to R-Day. However, an LOA for the Class of 2017 was given at that time as a sort of "deferral" (my term, not USMA's). It could also be looked at as a medical turn-back.

DS's 2017 (this cycle) LOA was contingent upon waiver approval, nomination and continued good work in college courses (@his Plan B - Texas A&M / Corps of Cadets) Waiver has been approved and a nomination has been received. DS will need to submit first semester grades (should have them by end of December). Until then, we wait for the BFE.

I hope that explains our LOA better...

West Point sent out very few LOA's for 2017- mainly to recruited athletes and URM's
There will be no rolling admissions this year and most appointments will go out on or after FEB 26.

Our regional commander put out ththat only recruited athletes would receive appointments early (ie rolling admissions). Others with LOA's (diversity candidates, soldier candidates) would most likely still be waiting until early March (which is the latest estimate for all apopintments) along with everyone else.

OP - is your candidate a recruited athlete?

Thanks Marciemi! Yes DS is a recruited athlete. It was a pleasant surprise (to say the very least) that he received the SUPE nomination even before he was done with his Congressional interviews. The feedback that he received from his interviews was very positive, so he was confident of his performance. His Grandpa (82nd Airborne) is smiling down on him from heaven I am sure!

My DS reminded me of the exceptions after my post - thanks for all the follow up - makes perfect sense - congratulations are due then - keep that young man healthy this time :)

A couple of questions, if anyone has some ideas thank you in advance...

1. Can DS expect the BFE soon, given the LOA from Sept and the SUPN Nom from last week? Or will it more likely come in Feb?

2. Should he continue with his plan B? West Point is by far his first choice and he will immediately accept his appointment offer when it comes.

3. Should he notify the other college coaches that he is no longer interested?

Thanks!

Nothing is official until the BFE is in hand. Continue with other plans and certainly DO NOT notify other college coaches that he is no longer interested. I'm sure they realize he's looking at other schools anyway.

Also, people have been known to be injured or have other things come up that prevented them from reporting to WP... or they might even find they didn't like it there over the course of plebe summer and dropped. Keep this in mind going forward. I wouldn't burn any bridges I didn't have to.

Congratulations on the SUP nom! awesome!

A HUGE Congratulations! I just saw your post and I know how proud you must be of your DS.
I was in attendance at the Congressman Sessions' nomination committee luncheon with my DS (ESD Senior) when we had the pleasure hearing your son’s story of his dedicated efforts. It is clear he is bound for great things as an officer. Listening to his speech was very encouraging for my DS. He is determined to attend the Merchant Marine Academy and has been accepted to Texas A&M (engineering) as his “Plan B”. He will also join the Corps of Cadets, if he ends up in College Station, like your DS, but he says he will definitely re-apply to the academy for the class of 2018, if a 2017 appointment does not work out. I know hearing your son’s speech raised his level of determination.
He did get a nomination from Congressman Sessions and has “on hold” status at the USMMA.
( I tried sending a "PM" and/or Email and I guess I have not "posted enough" to have the privilege.)

So happy to hear that my DS's experience through his process may make a difference for another SA candidate. It is amazing that at age 18, DS already has a 'story' that he can share with others. I'll pass along your comments to him... he'll be home for the holidays in about a week! We are anxious for his journey to West Point to be complete but know that should anything go south at this point, he's done everything HE can to make it happen.

Keep the faith through your DS's process. Sometimes its hard to understand why things happen the way they do. Just know that your DS will always have the opportunity to make the BEST of whatever comes his way!

FWIW - my son received his Nom notification via multiple sources o/a Oct 28. The BFE came 10 days later.

Plan B still in place in the event of injury, etc.

He notified other coaches once the BFE was received/signed: told USNA, Stanford, Michigan of his choice to attend USMA. This was out of professional courtesy/respect and to give those coaches time to recruit other student/athletes.
