What is the best way to go about gaining the attention of a Navy Coach (Mens Track) for possible recruitment?, and how does the Naval Academy recruit athletes? is there a specific slots per team?

-Any Help:confused:

The best way is to send him/her an e-mail. Make it brief -- say that you're interested in USNA and list a couple key stats. Keep in mind that you have to be at least a junior to contact the coach.

Each sport has a certain number of "blue chips",or slots, depending on the team size (i.e. football will have more recruits than the sailing team). The only people who know the specific amount is the coach and admissions.

yea Im a junior, i recently took a CVW, but never got to go speak to the coach or anything.
Thanks!

I would suggest you have your coach contact his counterpart at USNA... coaches are listed at www.navysports.com. You also might consider a sports camp next summer.

Actually, you can contact any coach at any time. True, they will be a bit more serious about considering you if you are a junior, but if you have the stats to send the email, do it.

Just speaking from experience.

On Navysports.com there is a Recruit tab. Follow the directions on there. This will get the coach your info. Ensure to cruise around the page if you have not for the respective sport and truly get an idea if you have a shot at competing at that level. They are Division I sports and are taken seriously. If you have the ability, a summer sports camp is a great way to get to know the campus, coaches, and be noticed by the coaching staff. Best of luck.

Recommend including some sort of official "paperwork" in the email to make it easier for the coach. There is a difference between I run 4:40 mile vs a press release or news paper article mentioning you ran 4:40.

Hey if you want any help/advice on recruiting with Coach Cantello or Coach Cooksey, just shoot me a PM, I'd be more than happy to share my recruiting experience I had with them.
I had been getting recruited by Coach Cantello/Coach Larish since my junior year for track/XC and actually just received my appointment today. Let me know and best of luck! Keep on dropping big times

Sorry for the double post...

Basically, just run fast and do not feel afraid to call Coach Cantello. Have some solid times to show from last year for track, thats essentially the constant that coaches are able to use for runners across the country since all the distances in track are the same. Emails are good, but nothing beats a call. You're going to be talking to him one day anyway so might as well start now. Again, best of luck.

A friend of mine attended a Navy Crew camp this past summer and was recruited. Unfortunately, he was not sure whether USNA was for him, and missed the commitment deadline. Now, he realizes he wants to go to USNA and is applying as a non-recruited athlete, with the likelihood of still receiving an appointment due to sports.

The point of that story, try to go to a summer sports camp. If you're talented, it will show them your skills and maybe spawn a recruitment offer.

Deadline

Okay now you are scaring me. What's a commitment deadline. I didn't realize there was any deadline for being recruited. Maybe it's an NCAA thing? DS's sport is not NCAA.

WOW! Congrats on the appointment, and i will definitely PM you.
thanks.

There is not a commitment period. A coach can give an athlete three different levels of support. The highest level being the "blue chip". Given that you still need the nomination and the final Appointment - no true commitment is extended by either side.

I apologize if I am incorrect. That is just how he explained it to me.

What are the other two levels? Also, I thought "Blue Chipping" just meant that the athlete was guaranteed a spot on the sport's roster, meaning no tryout required. There's a rambling thread on this topic here, and it honestly left me more confused than not.

From a printout that I received the levels are as follows:

1) Recommended Sport Recruit
2) Approved Sport Recruit
3) Blue Chip Athete

I donot have enough posts to reply to a PM...

Just to give you a bit of background: I am a rower and have been dealing with the Assistant Coaches and Head Coach since August of 2011. I had an unofficial visit during junior year, NASS, Rowing Camp and an official visit in early fall. I received an LOA dated August 29. It’s my understanding that the coach used the “Blue Chip” for the LOA because I live in a highly competitive area (reading the forum, aren’t they all).
The LOA is used as a sign of the Academy’s commitment to the candidate and should positively impact the MOC’s Nomination committee, because there is no downside for putting a candidate on the nomination slate. I did receive a Congressional nomination last Friday and am still waiting for the Senator’s lists (as of last weekend - still doing interviews).
Regarding “Silver Bullets” , I think that may refer to a Superintendent Nomination of which I believe there are 50. If a candidate w/LOA did not receive a Nomination or one could not found in the nomination pool I believe that can be used as a last resort.
It’s been a long road.. one that I hope raps up quickly.

Heavy or Light? When was your visit? I think that you may know my son.

Sent you another PM. I know you can't reply, but it had some personal details that I would prefer not to post in an open forum.
