NROTC Transfer

DS was just notified he recieved scholarship for 3rd choice school (Old Dominion). He gets Early Decision results for 1st choice (Virginia Tech) Friday. If he gets accepted to VT, could he get the scholarship transferred to VT. Thanks.

First congratulations! With regards to a transfer - perhaps. He can apply for a transfer of scholarship in the March time frame. Transfers are very hard to get and I imagine a transfer to VT (an SMC) will be even harder since I expect it's already filled up with no room for others. Besides classroom size etc. since the Corps of Cadets are boarded together there is the added difficulty of finding bed space for your son. It just might not be there.

Of course VT's Early Decision is binding so if he cannot transfer the scholarship he will lose it. I never understand why people who are applying for a ROTC scholarship apply ED to any school, but that's just me. If he is accepted to VT I would contact the Corps of Cadets there immediately and let them know you will try to transfer the scholarship, and contact the NROTC scholarship folks at the same time. The heads up can't hurt and it might help.

My understanding is that the navy scholarship stays with the school, not the applicant. You cannot transfer something that is not yours. It may not be too late to withdraw the ED application to Tech. That may be your best bet right now if your DS wants to keep his NROTC scholarship.

You are incorrect. NROTC scholarships can be transferred on a case by case basis. There are no guarantees, but there are a number of posts discussing the option and positive results.

When you get your packet via US Mail, there will be instructions on a "school change request"

My understanding is that each school has an allocation of scholarships. If school A has 10 and School B has 10, just because your DS wants to go to school B, doesn't mean that school A must give the scholarship up. School B must have a scholarship available and be willing to accept your DS. In the end, both schools will end up with their full complement of 10 scholarships each. In my opinion, a long hill to climb with no guarantees. Further, I doubt that the folks in Pensacola are going to hold that slot at ODU when they find out (from you) that you are contractually obligated to Tech.
 
AMS2017, your understanding is incorrect. The scholarship is tied to the candidate and the school, but the school can be switched.
The Navy will award around 900 scholarships this year. They have awarded ~350 at this point. (My guess, could be way off, but don't think it is.) The chances that all of the slots have been filled at VT are slim. OD and VT are essentially the same cost to the Navy for B99; same state. Being revenue neutral in your ask helps.
The simple answer to B99's question is, yes scholarships can be switched, but there are no guarantees. You need to reach out immediately to the folks in P-cola for advice on how best to proceed. Call the number on your acceptance letter an ask for guidance.

I don't know if I would reach out immediately. I expect waiting until next week when OP has heard from VT will be sufficient. It's still a theoretical question right now and might be moot by next week. But then I'm sure that's what Oldsalt meant. (Or maybe not? After all he's an old salt and knows more than me! :biggrin:)
 
I would reach out immediately. Rescinding an ED application is a big deal and probably lowers the chance of getting into VT. The folks in P-cola will have the straight scoop. You could try the unit, but at the end of the day, the P-cola folks decide who gets to go where.

Good point about the ED. I had simply assumed that if one applied ED then they really weren't concerned about or counting on the scholarship as they had already made the decision that VT was the school for them regardless of other circumstances. But maybe not. As you say there is still time to rescind and if the Corps at VT can provide some insight into chances for transfer that could be good input into any decision on rescinding.

Are those figures posted, based off of previous years figures, or just a gut feeling?

My understanding is that the DS was awarded a scholarship to attend OD. For some reason, he does not want to attend OD. He does have the option to request a change of schools. Perhaps my argument is too obvious. What I indicated was that each school has an allocation and that does not change simply because the applicant wants to go to another school. If there is a slot available at VT, he may get it. Had he not applied ED at VT, he would have had a fall back to keep his scholarship at OD. The ED complicates the matter quite a bit. This is perhaps why they are coming here for guidance.

Schools do have quotas, but they may not be as hard as you believe. The ED issue complicates the issue, but the folks in P-Cola will be able to give guidance, they are very helpful. I always go to the SME before making a decision. Nowadays that is my wife and not the CMC.

Both. It's been a while, but a little more than a third before Christmas was a good ROT.
