Hello again everybody!

I have just now checked the website and found out I have been awarded the 4-year NROTC-MO scholarship to UT Austin (#1 choice!)!! I would like to thank you all for the help you have given me!

I checked the website like 10 times today so I wasn't expecting a change. When I logged in and saw a wall of text I did a double take and after frantically reading/rereading roughly 10 times I realized it had good news :shake:

For all other applicants I'm sure you would like to know my stats and what not:
I finished my application/interview late October. Had an awesome interview.
Highest SAT/ACT equivalent math: 640
Highest SAT/ACT equivalent CR: 800
Rank: 1st out of 71
GPA: 3.98 unweighted
Taking AP Calculus, DC english, government/economics and a bunch of extracurriculars

Captain of drumline
Lead stage roles in theatre
Co-founded Church youth group with 400+ volunteer hours to the Church
President of senior class
Captain of winter guard
NHS member
Various awards

No athletics/sports whatsoever

PFT score: 298
ACT composite: 30
SAT composite: 1911

Once again thank you everybody for all the advice given here, it was of tremendous help to me.

Mine hasn't changed, is that bad?

Hello,

First, congrats on the scholarship! From someone who wants it really bad that is awesome!

Second, my scholarship page hasn't changed at all... I'm assuming this is bad? Is everybody's updated at the same time or do some update before others? I just really want to know whether or not I was selected or not! :frown:

I really can't tell you how nervous I am that I didn't get it... :/

Congrats again and Merry Christmas!
Erik

Thanks!

And no I don't believe that is bad. I've been reading a lot of posts and it seems the scholarship notifications trickle in slowly. Don't give up hope yet :thumb:

Merry Christmas to you as well!

Congratulations Darrowboat. That's an excellent resume. I'm even more impressed by that AWESOME PFT score, especially given no athletics/sports whatsoever. You'll have to share the secret of your regimen with me sometime!!!

Hi Erik. Darrowboat is correct. The results of the first board trickle out slowly. You may hear something in the next few days. If you don't, not to worry. There is another board in March (I'm pretty sure its March).

My son was not awarded a scholarship by the first board. He did receive an email (in January I think but not so sure) informing him he was not selected and that he could continue to update his application until some specific date by which it needed to be ready for the second and final board. He didn't receive a scholarship then either and was notified of that in April. Fortunately he had plan B in place and ready to execute so he still attended his #1 school and enrolled in NROTC as a college programmer. He is now in his sophomore year and earlier this week he received a 2.5 year in school NROTC MO scholarship.

Point is, it is way too early to give up hope on a scholarship either out of this board or the next. Have plans B, C, D, etc. ready to go in case they are needed. If no scholarship comes through for you, there are other paths to commissioning including NROTC MO College Programmer, PLC, and OCS. Seek out other sources of scholarship money and financial aid. It's out there. Get the FAFSA done as early as possible next year. Execute your backup plans with determination, if necessary, and you will find a way to commission.

Don't play the poor me game. It's a waste of time. Work your plans and execute like the future officer you are.

You're Absolutely Right!

Hello sir,

First, congratulations to you as well regarding your sons side load scholarship! You must truly be a proud father!

Second, I completely agree with you that the "poor me" game is not to be played. I have been thinking about the best logical way of (worst case scenario) going through college without the scholarship. First, I applied for the USNA (currently have a nomination and am triple qualified) as that is another path to becoming a MC officer. Second, I have spoken to recruiters and officers, as well as read about the PLC and OCS. As for becoming a college programmer like your son, this route has also been heavily considered and thought out. Finally, I am considering entering the DEP program before the second board, hoping for the scholarship, but if not awarded serving my time enlisted time until promoted to Corporal and I obtained the age of 20 to then be qualified for the MECEP.

I'm getting off topic now and taking away from darrowboats thread. I apologize, darrowboat! Congrats again!

Merry Christmas to you as well, sir, and once again congratulations on your sons success. Thank you for the insight! It calmed me down quite a bit!

After reading Darrowboat's post, I checked the status of my DS and saw he was also selected for a 4 year NROTC MO sholarship to the Citadel, his first choice and where he has already been accepted.
I'm at work, so I just called and told him. He is very excited and happy!
Congratulation to you Darrowboat!

Texas Armed Services Scholarship

Darrowboat- Just wanted to make sure you had checked into the TASS. It is a $10,000/year schoalrship for college students in Texas who will graduate then go on to serve in the military. The congressmen in your district are allowed to give one a year. You just need to contact them and ask if they have already awarded their TASS. Have you checked into that? My DD also got the NROTC-MO last year (to Texas A&M ) and we found out about TASS at the last minute, but were still able to get it. Unlike the NROTC-MO, this scholarship can be used for room and board ! Just wanted to make sure you had checked into it!

Cindy,
Is DD using the NROTC-MO scholarship and TASS simultaneously? Or do you have to choose one over the other?
Thanks in advance!

TASS

Darrowboat- You can definitely use both at the same time (we are doing so right now)! I think this is the misinformation that keeps the TASS from being used as often as it should be. People think they have to choose one or the other- not true. It does have specific requirements that must be met ( i.e. all monies must be repaid if student drops out of ROTC) , but if your goal is definitely going into the military post graduation, it is a great scholarship. Good luck!:thumb:

This is actually the first I've ever heard of that scholarship I will most definitely be looking into it thank you!

Anxiously Waiting

Congratulations to the two folks that have been awarded the NROTC-MO scholarship. My DS is anxiously awaiting the board's decision. I have checked the status every hour since I read Darrowboat's posting last night and I find myself holding my breath each time.

I know EXACTLY how you are feeling right now! My DD was not awarded the scholarship at the first board and it was a tough pill to swallow. I share this on the off chance your DS does not get it this first round. My DD was awarded the full 4 year scholarship to her first choice school (Texas A&M) with the second board. So, if things do not go exactly as ya'll hope this first board, don't give up. It's the waiting that is the killer. Good Luck and Semper Fi!:thumb:

Thanks for the encouraging message. I did not realize how much I wanted this for him. I want to see him experience that joy of succeeding and seeing his hard work pay off. The status site seems to be down this morning. I have not been able to access it :frown:

Re-Boarded

DS recieved the call this afternoon that he is being reboarded. Capt said he was very surprised that DS was not awarded in first boards. I am disappointed for him. I hope going to the Tolo dance tonight will take his mind off of the news.

The kids handle this stuff better than we parents do. Good luck to him with the next board.

Thanks for the kind words. We talked a bit before he left for the dance and as you said, he seems to be managing it better than I am. DS will discuss package improvements with the XO to increase his chances for the next one.

If SAT scores are an issue or can be improved there is still time to register for the Jan. SAT. I think the deadline to register is Dec. 28. Deadline to register for the next ACT is early Jan. I think.

NROTC Marine Scholarship

Anyone have any further insight on the notification process for the MO scholarship. I saw that 2 people were awarded the scholarship on this sight and 1 was reboarded. My son has not heard anything. He checks his status daily online. Very anxious!

My DD found out she had been awarded her scholarship at the second board by a phone call from the recruiting officer in our area. She got the call in mid to late April. If I remember correctly, the cut off date for the 2nd board is January 31. Then we received a letter more than a week later with the official documents explaining how to accept and where she was being assigned. When I called to ask a question about the paperwork, I got the feeling from Pensicola that they were not thrilled that the officer had "stolen their thunder", but we were definitely appreciative :thumb:
