Will having a principal nomination affect the chances of one being granted a waiver?

I think not. However, having a nomination of any type likely determines IF USNA will consider waivering a condition.

WP, are you saying that having a nomination in hand increases the chances of being granted a waiver?

No. Having a nom and being otherwise qualified will lead USNA to consider a waiver. My understanding is that a nomination, principal or otherwise does not contribute to a waiver being granted. Only considered.

In other words, and I may stand to be corrected, until a nomination is received, a waiver is not considered. Once a waiver is being considered, having a PRINCIPAL nomination does not contribute to that waiver being granted.

Common sense says that WP has the basic concept correct, but you should expect that there is more involved than having a nomination. Candidly, many candidates who are questionably viable at best do receive nominations. It would seem intuitively obvious that if a candidate is not otherwise qualified, or marginally qualified, on a slate with one or more who are better qualified, USNA is not likely to initiate the waiver process.

The waiver process is only initiated for candidates that USNA would give an offer of appointment had the medical issue(s) not been a factor. Even being triple qualified plus a nomination is not a guarantee of an appointment (or entering the waiver process, for those who are medically [2Q] disqualified). So what I am basically saying is that when the waiver process is started, USNA has already determined that if your medical issue is found waiverable, the chances of receiving an appointment are good, mostly contingent on the grant of a waiver; though again, nothing in this process is guaranteed until you receive official notification of an appointment.

Also, let's not confuse the actual waiver process. A waiver being granted DOES NOT have anything to do with a nomination, rather it is a thorough review of each candidate's medical file by the USNA medical staff, which normally is also reviewed by Navy's Bureau of Medicine, and a recommendation is then sent to the Superintendent for a final decision.

Seems you do not need a nom for waiver to be considered.

DS applied to both USNA and USMA but congressional requires applicants to choose only one for nomination. After a lot of thought, DS chose USMA. Received a DQ in November after review of remedial records. Received word on friday that USNA granted waiver. His nom also came through last week - to USMA as requested. All good news but ....

Interesting. So your son's been medically qualified to USNA, nominated but disqualified to USMA? So is there any "next step" re: a SA possibility? :confused

More generally, it seems we've now got conflicting information.

That is the jist of it. Obviously hoping that USMA hasn't gotten around to their waiver requests yet?? The waivers were requested on 11/20 and no additional info was requested before Navy cleared. So hopefully for him Army is just a bit slower

The Nominations in our district are principal and can only go to one SA. Guess he chose wrong  - but hopefully it will all work out. Though at this point it looks to be an uphill struggle anyway as he didn't get the principle nom - rather 1st alt. Knew going in the nom committee wouldn't give a principle to a medical DQ. Tried to get everything done early but still not enough time to clear a waiver before the noms. Not sure where he will stand on NWL and how that will work out. Good thing Plan B is all set.

Has your DS filed for a VP nom at USNA? Have you or he contacted the office of the nominator to determine whether there is a chance to get an unused nom to USNA? It appears you are on the brink, so now is the time to pull out all the stops in your search for a nom. Best wishes
