Hello everyone! So I'm currently a high school senior and Norwich and Massachusetts Maritime Academy are my top choices. I have a 2.3 GPA and a 1450 on the SATs with a 1010 Math and Verbal combined. I've done plenty of extracurriculars and am part of the Naval Sea Cadet Corp, a navy JROTC. I was told I might have to go to a summer program to prove myself if i don't get in through direct admissions, which i am absolutely up for doing. These colleges are perfect for me in so many ways and would teach me so much. So do I have a shot?

kmg9539- While I would be lying to you if I looked at your GPA and test scores and said that they are really stellar and will guarantee your acceptance, but that doesn't mean you can't or won't get accepted at one of those two. How much conversation have you had with the admissions office at MMA and Norwich about your chances and what if anything have they told you about strengthening your record? We used to have the directors of admission for both Norwich and MMA on the site here but I haven't seen them posting in a while now and I don't think that anyone on here will be able to give you odds on acceptance at either place. At this point I don't know if there is much you can do to strengthen your HS academic record rapidly- but I would suggest that you call the admissions officers directly and see what they might suggest. Anyone on board here have some thoughts?

Mass Maritime and Norwich are both excellent schools- Good luck with your applications.

Bruno - ya I know my scores aren't the best but I've had multiple talks with MMA and Norwich and had an interview with MMA. They known that I'm determined and there both the kind of schools that will help push me to my very best. So I think a this point, your right in saying the best I can do is hope for the best

I also applied to those colleges. Norwich requested I send my first semester transcript and that's with a 2.8 cumulative and 23 composite. I was accepted to Great Lakes maritime and waiting to hear back from Massachusetts Maritime.

Break down of my scores

Ya I got a call from Norwich two days ago saying I was accepted so that was great news! Now I'm just waiting to hear back from Mass Maritime and thats when I'll be making my decision when I hear back from them.

That's excellent news.:thumb: Good luck - I hope that you hear similar news from Mass Maritime. Having to choose between 2 good schools is a nice problem to have and if for some reason you don't have to choose- you have a great option already in hand. Congratulations and Merry Christmas!

KMG i would really go on a tour to Norwich if you haven't already, i was also accepted to Norwich and was optioning for Army Rotc, that was until i found out tuition without an army rotc scholarship was going to be around 42000, thats without adding in the merit scholarship. Not bashing Norwich its a great school, but think about coming about coming out of school with 120,000 in debt if you have a merit scholarship all 4 years. I personally think it comes down to if your in Mass look greatly at MMA, my brother went there and the networking is great, and the alum is also awesome. If you go engineering your life is just about set, my brothers good friends are making well over 100,000 after being out only 2 years. In this economy that is exceptional. Overall they are both great schools, my only down fall to Norwich was the tuition, i just cant afford that so i am now looking at MMA again which i cant apply for until the summer and i will enter my freshman year at almost 21 years old, luckily i have been taking courses at a local community college, saves money all the way around. Either way good look.

Keep the faith

My message to you is don't lose hope! My son has a marginal GPA (2.57) and marginal test scores (ACT comp 23, some areas 24, 25). He lettered in a varsity sport, performed community service, and was a member of a few clubs. He was accepted at every school to which he applied: The Citadel, Norwich, and Massachusetts Maritime. What I can tell you from experience is that demonstrated interest and building personal relationships with admissions offices/personnel is the key. On paper, he is not what would be considered top-choice, but he was able to show on a personal level that he was a candidate that the schools wanted. We visited all three and the decision was tough...but done! He's happy with his choice and ready to move on to the next phase of his life. Don't take the numbers as hard facts. Sell yourself!
