*phew* apparently registration doesn't work with @live.com e-mails, so i made a g-mail to finally post! anyways....

I have recently earned the primary (principal) nomination to USNA. I know I am medically and physically qualified, however, I am quite concerned if I am academically qualified. Reason being is my 3.7 GPA and 34 Math/29 English. I am also a leader at work and church. Should I be worried about getting 3Q'd?

Also, I have received an e-mail for an opportunity for a CVW. Can anyone give me some insight on this? Will this be used in my application? Is an offer for a CVW competitive?

Thank you.

Let me guess... you're concerned you're overqualified academically? Seriously, with those scores you should be fine although there is more to being academically qualified than that. ECs come into play, etc.

Getting a CVW is a good thing. You should take advantage of it to see the academy up close if you can. The point is to help you decide if you really want to attend the academy.

I'm just worried about the 3Q'd part. From looking at numbers before, it seemed like many people that had nominations were not 3Q'd. It's just agonizing to wait for my BFE. T_T

I think you are mixing apples and oranges. USNA determines if you are 3Q as part of their application process. There is a separate process run by your MOC to determine who will be offered a NOM. These are independent processes. Once you are 3Q AND have a NOM, you are in the running for getting an appointment.

I am aware of the differences. My main concern is how the USNA determines if I am 3Q, specifically academically.

No Set Formula

I can't ever recall reading about specific benchmarks to determine ones 3Q status, specifically, scholastic qualification. If DoDMerb says qualified and you pass the CFA you're two-thirds of the way there. As to your scholastic (academic) status, I believe that is up to the personnel at admissions. I've heard it is determined by factors such as your grades, class ranking, test scores and evaluations from your math and english teachers. If you are 3Q'ed and have a principal nomination get ready for the haircut of your life :)
Cheers.

The Q for 'scholastic' is determined by a numer of factors...things such as: class rank, GPA, SAT/ACT scores, teacher recommendations, leadership activities while in h.s., sport participation, extracurricular involvement, etc.. USNA never reveals the exact formula used, so it is impossible for anyone on here to determine your 'chances' but it never fails to keep people from asking.

I do not intend on hijacking this thread. However, my son just received a CVW request and is qualified CFA, DoDMERB, and as far as scholastic goes I am assuming, like it was said earlier, is up to the admin personnel at that time. He is an Eagle Scout, varsity letter earner in 2 sports, Boys state, USMA SLS, 1990 SAT, all AP courses from day one, blah, blah. So, I am assuming it is up to personnel.

Are our CVW requests something to feel a little more comfortable about? I know not to get excited, way too many factors remaining. My sons B&G officer is very happy with his CVW, but not wanting to get my son too confident.

I certainly understand your not wanting to get your son too excited. A CVW is a positive sign but it is no guarantee. At least they didn't not grant him a CVW. So.. he's still in the running. Of course you didn't mention if he has a nom which is also a key part of the equation.

Just had his interviews a week or so ago. Should hear any minute now.

Being offered a CVW is definitely a good sign, especially if you're 3Q'ed with a nom. However, as noted above, it's not a guarantee. There are always some (no idea how many) CVW recipients who end up without appointments. Conversely, there are many who are not offered CVWs who end up with appointments.

If invited and financially able to do so, definitely take advantage of a CVW!

We're heading down on Jan. 31st.
Any recommendations for hotels?

I did the CVW in the beginning of December. It was a great time, and it was really helpful to get an up-close look at the Academy. We were able to talk with the MIDNs and ask tons of questions. Also, we got to sit in on their courses, experience the daily routine, and tour the facilities (The sailing center was definitely a highlight for me!). If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a PM! :)
Definitely take advantage of this opportunity! It'll only help; they told us before the CVW even officially started that we weren't being evaluated in any way. It's main purpose is for you to ensure that USNA is a good fit for you, instead of figuring out that it isn't on the first day of Plebe Summer. Good luck!!
