DS received an LOE dated 12/20! Last paragraph opens up with "Since this letter is sent only to outstanding candidates deserving of admission..." It then goes on authorizing him for an overnight visit. DS has a big grin. He had not heard from West Point since completing his application back in August other than completing the DoDMERB physical. Now he has HOPE. What a great Christmas present!

Congrats! I'm guessing he had a very strong file?

DS had to work to get his SAT CR score above 600. His SAT is now CR 630 and Math 770.

Class rank is 58/353 with GPA 3.83 U and 4.67 W. His high school is#1 public high school in state.

3 yr Varsity lacrosse with 4th year this spring.

Boys State Attendee and AROTC scholarship recipient to TX A&M.

On Dec. 14 DS uploaded 2 letters of recommendation to his portal. Letters were not from teachers but from individuals that had coached or worked with DS on various projects. They promoted DS leadership skills citing specific projects or instances. The letters were approved and entered to his file in a matter of hours.
Maybe this helped.

For uploading the documents do you simply just upload the file/picture to the portal and that's it?

DS quickly showed me. Click on upload docs tab. Select document type (DS chose letters of recommendation). DS had previously scanned and loaded letters to computer and he selected and submitted individually. There is a space to comment on what you are submitting. He had a very brief description of each, maybe 2 sentences. After he submitted the documents the portal showed as pending approval and now it shows approved with green check. DS said it took about 3 hrs. for documents to be approved.

Very helpful, thanks!

Congrats! Really strong file...GOOD LUCK!

HZMA,
No guarantees, but you are in great shape at this point. Very few LOEs are sent out. If you have not done so already, make sure to complete the Physical and the fitness test and get all green Icons on your Portal.
The long odds of getting into West Point have now shifted in your favor. Congradulations.

Lets say we get an appointment, will we find out if we got in via the NWL or our MOC? Just curious!

All green with Noms

BigNick- Thank you! DS portal has been all green since mid September and he has 2 nominations- Presidential and Congressional (NC09). Originally our MALO said to just get a nomination other than Presidential but now he is telling us to pursue all nominations until we have appointment in hand. Unfortunately DS did not receive nomination from Sen. Hagan and will be interviewing with Sen. Burr's committee on 1/5. DS thought his interview with the Senator's committee went very well and not as good with the Congresswoman's committee but results were flip-flopped.
I believe lack of leadership positions "on paper" plus his sub 600 score on SAT CR initially hurt his application. He was also a non-select for SLS but selected for NASS/CVW. Having well written letters of recommendation, from highly respected individuals, showcasing his leadership skills helped. I personally do not think it was coincidental that he received an LOE 6 days after he submitted the letters via the new upload document tab. I think the letters help pull his application out of the pile. Even though he has played Varsity lacross for 3 yrs and is going into his 4th year, his lacrosse coach does not choose captains but a "senior comittee" and DS did not feel comfortable listing himself as a captain.

As for other candidates, DS was planning on taking the SAT one last time in Jan. but now I am not sure. I think he still should. He did not want to take the SAT in Nov. but that is the test he was able to improve his CR score. I think he was disheartened because he had not heard anything from USMA except that he had passed his physical and that he was a "strong candidate".
If you have not received a 3 Q'd letter or an LOE I recommend taking the SAT the end of January.
His semester finals are in January and I caution DS to achieve the best grades he can until appointment is in hand.
