Hello everyone,

I was surprised when I logged into my candidate portal for USMA, and saw that I received two nominations. However, I have only been notified about one, so I was trying to figure out what the codes mean.

AK62: From what I can tell, AK62 means it is from my second senator; however, I was only notified by my first senator regarding a nomination.

AKAL5: I'm assuming that is from my congressman (AKAL is my congressional district), but I am not sure. What would the 5 mean? The nominations were both posted at the same time (December 31st); I was notified of my nomination from senator on December 19th. I have not been notified of any nomination from my congressman, so I just want to make sure that this is what it is before I get too excited.

Is it possible that I received all three nominations? Or could this just be an error?

Happy New Year!

Congratulations on your 2 noms!

AK62 means a nom from the junior Senator in Alaska.
AK - Alaska
6 - Senator
2 - Junior Senator (Of the two Senators, the junior one is the the senator who has served fewer years. '1' would be the senior Senator)

AKAL5 -
AK - Alaska
AL - At Large (meaning AK has only one Congressional District)
5 - is the 5th vacancy for your Congressman. Unless he/she has 2 slots available, 1-4 will be still occupied by cadets at WP next year and the 5th slot will be vacant and therefore needs a cadet to fill that 5th slot!

So, WP has been notified of two noms for you. The other Senator may not have slated you OR they may not have turned their slate in yet.

Thank you for the response. It definitely cleared things up!

I still have one question, if you do not mind answering it.

I have only been notified by my senior senator about a nomination (our senators almost always announce via press release; the senior senator announced on December 19th, and I was fortunate enough to receive one; however, there has been no press release from our junior senator, which is why I'm still a little skeptical). Is it possible that USMA accidentally got the senators mixed?

It's possible that there was a typo in entering the data on your portal. You could always confirm with West Point or the Senator's office.

It's more likely that the one who hasn't put out the press release submitted his/her slate to USMA first.

USMA does not read the press releases (seriously) nor are press releases "official" for SA purposes. Rather, the SAs know that you have a nom when the MOC submits his/her slate of nominees to the SA. Some may do it right after notifying candidates; others may procrastinate for days, weeks, or even months.

Slates are not due to the SAs until Jan. 31 or, in the case of those leaving office, Jan. 21. So there is time.

And congrats on your two noms. Terrific.

Thank you for the information! I guess I will just continue to be patient and see what happens.

I don't believe the AK62 means the junior senator. My son received a nom from our senior senator and it was posted on the USMA website as XX62.

It has always been my understanding that 1 was for the senior Senator and 2 was for the junior Senator - but my understanding could be wrong!
And that certainly makes more sense for Jwmiller6 if the 2 meant the senior Senator.
Thanks for the correction. :thumb:

Heres another scenario. My son received a NJ02. Does this just specify district? Does it designate principle or anything else?

The NJ02 indicates it is a nomination for New Jersey's 2nd congressional district. The letter from the representative should tell you the type of nomination.
