Retirement

I know the answer to that and it is NO the 4 yrs at USNA do not count towards retirement!

Well, I'm not sure the answer is as simple as "no." If I understand this, those years do not count toward the "20" but if you put in 20 active duty/post Academy, then there is a retirement benefit for those additional 4 years.

Correct me if I'm not.

Not quite.

Four years at the Academy will never count towards military retirement.

It does count towards FERS (Federal Employees Retirement System) if you enter federal service after you leave the military. The specifics about how this works are beyond me since I won't have to worry about it ever/for a long time.

Your 4 yrs at USNA do NOT count toward military requirement at any point. If you were a NAPSter, your year at NAPS does count from the get go, so you can retire 19 years after graduation.

You may be confusing this with med school. If you attend USUHS (the military medical school), and get to 20+ and retire, it's my understanding that you then get credit for those four school years in your retirement pay. If you went to USUHS out of USNA, you still never get credit for the 4 USNA years.

If you did time as prior enlisted or at a prep school (which essentially counts as prior enlisted) before entering an academy, that times counts towards your 20 however.

I don't believe part of your statement is correct, i.e. where you note "... or at a prep school." Foundation-designated prep school students receive no credit for that time. Only NAPSters.

My bad. You're correct. I forgot about the Foundation prep program.
