I am a soldier and everything is green on my portal. I am confident that my commanders endorsement is positive as is the soe by my platoon sergeant. I nearly maxed the cfa and I have read that in previous years soldier slots have gone unfilled and we are automatically considered for prep. Are soldiers chances better that other highly qualified applicants? Thanks in advance.

Honest answer, the chances are probably better as a soldier - take in account how many civilians apply:how many civilian slots are available to how many soldiers apply:how many soldier slots are available. As long as you are competitive (academically, physically, leadership-wise), in good standing, with your military background, you will have a leg up on other candidates - especially if you have a deployment in.

I got in direct through the Army and I attribute my success (in receiving an appointment to excelling academically) to the hard work during my time in service.

85 slots for active duty soldier applicants. The biggest discrimininator is the academics, if you have at something closed to 500+ on SAT Math and Verbal, should get into the prep school, if your SAT is 600+ on SAT Math and Verbal, good chance of a direct appointment.

32 C.F.R. PART 575—ADMISSION TO THE UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY

(6) Regular Army: This category is for enlisted members of the active Army. Appointments may be awarded to 85 Regular Army candidates. Application for admission, through command channels to the United States Military Academy Preparatory School (USMAPS) constitutes application for nomination under this category.

I wonder how "prep school" works for any AD soldier.

I do know that via an early conversation with someone "who should know" that AD personnel have great(er) chances categorically as long as your so qualified (as mentioned above). Service-connected nominations are good too ;).

I see your chances are great. In the meantime, keep soldiering :)

being in the top 30 to 40 of all AD soldiers applicants.

The prep school takes in about 200 each year. The breakdown is something along 1/3 recruited atheltes, 1/3 URM, and 1/3 soldiers. So it will be about 70soldiers (both AD and RC).

I spoke with the Major in charge of soldier admissions and he asked if I would be interested in attending USMAPS and I told him that I am very interested in that. So, the question I have is this; my SAT scores are pretty good...maybe good enough (in addition to everything else) to get an appointment to USMA ...but I am concerned that I have been out of the academic classroom for quite a while...to be honest I have forgotten LOTS of trig and calc. Will the Major and the admission board take into account the fact that I would prefer to go to us maps? I'm concerned I have been out of school too long and might have a very difficult time with the math if I don't attend the prep.

That's why they offer soldiers USMAPS.

If they think you're ready for direct appointment, do that. If they think USMAPS is a better option, then it probably is. I graduated HS in 2009 and had a direct appointment and came out with a very strong GPA the 1st semester, so it is possible. Time management is key - the work isn't that hard, just tedious.

deleted...sorry about that.

memberlg, thanks for the information. I don't know anything about the process for AD folks. This is obviously a pretty small pool of folks nationwide and I've never seen a soldier accepted into any of these programs--not that it doesn't happen all the time mind you, just not in the units I've been assigned :).
