Hi everyone!

I'm currently in 10th grade in a full IB school. For IB HL subjects I will choose Math, Physics and some other subject. For standard level subjects I think I will go for english, dutch and ITGS. I was wondering if you need to pick a language in the Air Force Academy. I am a native Dutch speaker so that's why I chose Dutch, however, I know that if there is a foreign language requirement, Dutch will probably not be included. Does anyone know if I am required to have done a certain amount of a foreign language course in High School to be accepted into the Air Force Academy? I am currently in French beginners and in my old (Dutch) school I took two years of French as well. Will I get any credit for this, IF it is required? Thanks!

Yes, no Dutch at USAFA: http://www.usafa.edu/df/dff/?catname=Dean of Faculty

However, you do not need any prior experience for other languages except Spanish (unless that has changed recently). You will have an opportunity to take placement classes for any language you want so you can test into higher level French.

Ok thanks! That's great news! I will just finish IB with the subjects I have chosen and if I am lucky enough get accepted into the AFA, I will choose French. Thanks so much!

My DS had 4 years of Spanish but chose Russian and has enjoyed it. Chinese and Arabic are also important 'strategic' languages. Keep an open mind, you have many choices.

The thing is, I am really bad at learning new languages. I am comfortable with Chem, Physics and Math, but languages... that's my weakness right there. I want to keep it as easy as possible with the languages. Since I have experience with French, and both Dutch and English have similar words as French, this will be the least difficult for me. Are you also supposed to take a full 4 years of that language in the Academy?

Depends

The amount of a language you HAVE to take depends on your major. If your a techy major then you HAVE to take two semesters and if you are a fuzzy major you HAVE to take 4 semesters unless you receive a waiver saying otherwise.
