Hey guys-
I know WP takes HS competitiveness into consideration, and that's where my problem is. My HS is not the best one around. On a grading scale, we usually average a C. There is a very good private HS in the area, but its around 30 minutes away from my house and too expensive for my family. I take the mist advanced courses available, but I don't know if that will be enough. Any responses are EXTREMELY appreciated!!
Thanks,
NDIUSuperfan

I had a mid-3 GPA from a really bad high school in one of the worse academic states (Florida) and ended up getting ranked 20/450ish in my class and received an appointment. I think they look at your class rank more to compare with your peers.

That is a weight off. Thanks!

In all fairness, it should be understood that Sawndog entered WP through a different door than NDIUSuperfan will be.

From Sawndog in another thread:
I got in direct through the Army and I attribute my success (in receiving an appointment to excelling academically) to the hard work during my time in service.'

Applying as a soldier is totally different than applying as a High School senior.

NDIUSuperfan - based on your school's profile ( which should be submitted by someone, usually the counselor, at your school), WP will know the kinds of courses that are and are not offered at your school as well as the competitiveness of your school (how many graduates go to 4 year colleges). You will not be penalized for not taking advanced classes if your school does not offer them.

As Sawndog said - class rank is more important than GPA. You should aim to have a very high class rank and ACT/SAT scores.

I don't know how many of our grads go to a four year college. No one works at McDonald's or anything like that. Most get a job right out of high school, a decent one, but one that involves hard manual labor, such as farming or auto repair. There have been several optometrists, doctors, nurses, and business owners too. It all depends on the student.

The school profile will indicate how many go to a 4 year college. That information helps WP determine how competitive the school is and in turn helps them fairly assess your academic qualification.

There is no reason to worry about this issue as you cannot affect it. Make the best grades you can in the hardest courses you can and you will be putting your best foot forward. Worrying about things out of your control is a bad habit. Worrying about the things you can control is a much better habit!

Thanks for the advice:) I'm definately going to take all of the hardest classes.

How much does the competitiveness of one's high school affect their application?

Hello everyone,

How much does the competitiveness of one's high school affect their application? I know that it is part of the academics, but I am not sure how much it helps/hurts.

Hypothetically, if one was a valedictorian or salutatorian in a less rigorous school, would they be better off than someone in the top 10-25% of a more competitive school?

My high school is by no means a bad school, but it is definitely not a top notch school. I fear that this may hurt my chances at an appointment.

Thanks!

Again, this is nothing to worry about. If you were #1 or #2 in your class then you did the best you could with the HS academic opportunity given to you. Worry about something you can affect and that is a great equalizer- like maxing out your SAT score. If you went to a horrible HS, but were #1 in your class and had 800M, 800V SAT then the quality of your HS won't affect you at all.

I am in the top of my class (2/141, possibly 1 when the semester transcripts get finalized), but my SAT scores are not very great (1810, math - 620, CR - 590, writing - 600). Hopefully, the less competitve school doesn't hurt me too much (I'll try not to worry about it)!
