I'm pretty sure that I am one of the very few applicants from Alaska using this forum, so I may be the only one posting in this, ha ha!

But, Senator Murskow announced today, and I received a nomination to USMA! Just waiting on Senator Begich and Congressman Young to announce now.

Well we are not sure about Senator Begich but we know that Senator Murkowski has released her list and we know that the Honorable Don Young has forwarded at least one name to the Air Force Academy (my DD) but we could not find an official press release from him yet.

Wow, I'm actually surprised that someone else from Alaska posted!

Yes, I saw the press release on the 19th, and received my official nomination letter from Senator Murkowski today! Congrats on your DD's nom! I have looked into it, and I have only seen press releases from Congressman Young in 2000 and 2004, so I am not so sure he will have one. Also, I was going to send you a PM with a couple questions (if you don't mind taking the time to answer them), but I see that you have not had enough posts to reply, so I will ask them here.

When was your DD's nomination from Congressman Young dated?

Did Congressman Young choose your DD for an interview, then she received the nomination, or did she just receive the nomination letter without hearing anything from him?

How strong is your DD's file (if you do not mind me asking; I'm just trying to find out how other files in Alaska look; I am USMA applicant, so I am not exactly your DD's competition)?

Thank you!

I received my official letter from Senator Murkowski today also (I'm Far North's DD). I have not heard directly from Congressman Young, but on my USAFA application page he is listed as a nominator. I was not interviewed for Senator Murkowski, Senator Begich or Congressman Young.

A couple things on my file:
30 composite ACT
President of National Honor Society
3 years varsity volleyball-1 year captain and all conference
3 years varsity softball
National student leadership conference- at UC-Berkeley
USAFA Summer Seminar
Some Volunteer work
Ranked 1/167 of my high school class

I'm not applying to USMA, I'm only applying to USAFA, so it doesn't sound like we're competing with each other, but I hope this helps!

Thank you. I knew that Senator Murkowski and Senator Begich did not, but was not certain about Congressman Young.

Since you decided to share, I guess I will also share some of my stats:
1810-SAT
Class rank 2/141 (could be 1/141 when the semester closes out)
Boys' State
Boys' State Governor
Boys' Nation
2 years varsity basketball
1 year varsity soccer
1st place in my division of the Jiu Jitsu (a submission grappling martial art) state tournmant
dramatic leadering roles/staff participations
student council treasurer
volunteer staff on 2010 US Senate campaign
volunteer Kung Fu teachers assistant at a local elementary school

If you want, I could go into more detail, but this is almost everything!

Again, thank you! Good luck!

I'm from AK too :) I'm more of a lurker though because I'm only a junior. I have yet to start an applicationt this march :)

Do either of you know how competitive the nomination process is here?

And congrats btw on the nominations!

I know that Alaskan nominations are not as competitive as other states(like Texas or Virginia), but you should still turn in your best application. You might see people talk about their MOC's doing interviews, but Alaskan MOC's do not.

Thanks for the quick response.

When is a good time to start applying? Is now still to early?

I don't know when the "prime" application time is, but you might want to wait until the beginning of your senior year. You will have to send an official copy of your school transcript, and if you wait, your senior year schedule will be included. You will also need recommendations from a teacher or coach and a counselor or principal. You never know how long that takes, and it is not in your control, so ask early. If you wait you also have to opportunity to increase you SAT/ACT scores. When the time comes, remember the application packet needs to be received by the due date, it is not postmarked by the due date.

As HannahNP11 said, the earlier the better, but make sure you put the best application forward.

I would suggest having it sent in around early November of your senior year, so you can have the October SAT scores. I waited until just a few days before the deadline (not very smart) and had my packet express mailed. It made it on time, and I am now nominated by Senator Murkowski and Congressman Young; still waiting on Senator Begich to announce.

Senator Begich's military and veteran's affairs person (Senator Begich had something come up) is calling to everyone of their nominations today. And I have received my third nom to USMA! There should be an official press release on Monday.

Awesome! That's three chances to win the competition on the slate. Looking forward to good news for you.
