USMC SLCDA Summer camp

Wow, thanks for sharing, I might not have found out about it otherwise. Looks like an awesome program! I better get cracking at the application!:thumb:

I'm currently a junior and very interested in applying for this summer camp. I have a couple of questions though, I clicked on the link and downloaded the application. Should I print out the application then write everything down or what? I'm confused because the application opens up in Word and then I go to type and it deletes some of the stuff. Also when is the application due? Thanks for posting this, I would have never seen it if you hadn't.

Due March 1st. It probably doesn't matter what you do, you'll have to print it out at some point to get signatures.

I would send it in ASAP because word is getting out quickly and they only have so many spots. I think we edited the word document and mailed it in. This will only be the second year it is being held. Look at the facebook page as well. They took video and tons of photos documenting the experience. It was a great program and the students loved it. Good luck!

Good to know about this option!

As for timeliness of application, does anyone know if this is similar to NASS in being a "rolling admission" ... or is it, "get all the apps by 01 March, then select the most desirable candidates?"

What's the ultimate goal with this beyond "Marines?" Officers or enlisted?

Whistle Pig....last year they received the applications and then picked the best of the best. They wanted a good representation of each state similar to NASS. I encouraged the kids to get the applications in ASAP because I believe in not procrasinating, :). It is intended on giving incoming Juniors and Seniors a look into the life of a Marine Officer. They had a representative from the NROTC program and from USNA last year to explain the application processes. I am not sure if they are going to do that this year as well. My son had a blast! They toured HMX, TBS, did a service project with Habitat for Humanity, leadership and team building exercises, major PT, went to 8th and I for an evening parade, etc....

Oh, and it is FREE! Of course you have to get your DS or DD there, but everything else is covered. I posted this on this forum because it isn't well known just yet and it was an amazing experience for my son and his best friend last year.

I think that it's done by MCRC (Marine Corps Recruiting Command) says it all. I mean, it's not a terrible idea: give high-performing kids a look at Marine Officer stuff and the information they'll want to figure out how to get there. Obviously we'll see in a few years if the program still exists whether or not it's paid dividends.

A bunch of those pictures on their website and the facebook page were taken at Camp Barrett...like, literally a few hundred yards from where I'm sitting. I recognize a couple of the Captains in the "TBS day" pictures.

I did this last year along with usafa ss and i must say that this was 1000x more valuable than ss. if anyone had questions about SLCDA feel free to ask

It seems that is more appropriate for those who are thinking of enlisting. NASS is the program run by USNA to give perspective mids a flavor of what USNA is like.

Activities?

Wondering if this program talks of the admissions process for academys, in a general sense?
Also, was the physical part of it demanding?
Finally, are the kids kept busy?
Ours seems to want the most active and challenging experiences from these summer programs, coupled with some insight on admissions.

Thanks!

I think it is important to understand the endgame here. EVERYONE who graduates from USNA will be commissioned as an OFFICER in the Navy or Marines (depending on service selection). Everyone who enlists will NOT necessarily become an officer, but some will.

You can also search back on older threads on this topic. I wouldn't recommend going to a Marine recruitment office for information about USNA and their application process, if your main interest is attending USNA.

It is not for people who want to enlist. It is for kids interested in becoming Marine Corps officers. MCRC has representatives from NROTC and USNA talk to the kids and explain the different avenues they can take. They visit TBS which is a school for all USMC 2nd Lts. where the Marines get their MOS's and 6 months of training. They visit HMX which houses Marine One, again with Officers that are pilots. My son has grown up with a Marine Officer for a father and I assure you, it is good to go.

Stella....this is a great camp. The kids do keep very busy. Did you look at their facebook page? They have numerous videos posted. They also have an itinerary posted, did you look at that? If your child isn't interested in becoming a Marine Officer, then this isn't for you. If he is, this is the closest look he will get while in High School. Good luck!

Apparently, you are interpreting information on that website diffrerently than I am. It looks to me to be primarily focused on RECRUITING those interested in enlisting in the Marines and yes, SOME of them will one day become officers.

I think you are confused about what this camp is. Marine Corps Recruiting Command isn't a recruiters office. It isthe recruiting headquarters for ALL marines, officer and enlisted. This is intended to educate kids about the NROTC scholarship and other avenues in becoming a Marine Officer. I don't know what older threads you are talking about, but last summer was it's inception year, so very few people know about this camp.

Did you attend last year? My son did,

Yes, our kids looked at the facebook page and the camp site. BUT they also know from experience that those types of sites cannot tell the full or often even true picture. They generally couple sites produced by the camps with what students who have actually attended tell them was the reality of their experiences. So, that was the point of my question...to get some insight from those that had BTDT.
One of my kids had an experience where on paper they kids were going to be engaged and active. Instead, there was a ton of down time, endless lectures and very little physical recreational engagement, in spite of the fact that the camp site talked of and showed pictures of swimming, hiking, etc. Lesson learned. Not they want to talk to kids who have been TO the camps they are thinking of applying to. Oldest is doing so for summer seminars and is applying to all. Sophomore son is intersted in this one, so it is of great help to here from you and others who have been there or had a child who attended. Of course, everyone's opinion and experience may differ...but it is great to have some frame of reference from those with experience!
Thanks for posting the info and for replying to direct questions!
