I read on another thread on this forum that the max scholarship one could be given for AFROTC was capped at $18K/year.

Is there a similar cap with AROTC and NROTC scholarships? Or is this specific only to the Air Force

It is specific to AFROTC. BTW, the cap you refer to only applies to an AFROTC type 2 scholarship. A type 1 scholarship has no cap. At least that's my understanding from reviewing their web site.

Type 2 and 7 have a cap. Type 1 has no cap, but realize that Type 1 is only 5% of all scholarships. If 1000 in total are given out 50 will be Type 1. Traditionally 5K applicants are boarded, so basically it is 1% of all applicants.

To make that number of getting a Type 1 even scarier, if you want non-tech, only 5% of that 50 or 2-3.

Type 2s are 15% of all scholarships, and they are the 18K cap. They allow you to pay the difference if it is over 18K

Also the wording on their cap is very specific UP TO 18K, so if the tuition is 14K, they are only going to pay the bursar 14K, you don't get to place that 4K difference towards R &B.

Type 7 will pay the equivalent to the IS rate, so if you chose a college and your IS rate is 18K, than that is what they will give, if you go OOS or private they are still only going to pay IS. They will not allow you to pay the difference. The only option is to convert a Type 7 4 yr to a Type 2 3yr.

The beauty of the AFROTC scholarship is a cadet can take it to any school, it is not tied to the det. like A/NROTC. The blemish is they really do have a cap for the majority of cadets.

Your Army ROTC scholarship contract is going to say "all tuition and fees", so no cap.

Just for clarification: If you receive a Type 7 AFROTC scholarship AND your IS tuition (at your IS public school) is more than $18K, the Type 7 scholarship will pay more than $18K.

agagles,

I didn't want to blur it.

It is the same reason why I didn't go down the path of how the 18K is set, and 4 yrs in college and enter with 17K, but graduate at 22K you are SOL.

Also, AFROTC unlike AROTC is TUITION ONLY. AROTC allows the option between tuition or room/boarding.

AFROTC won't. Tuition and tuition only.
AFROTC scholarship recipients can take it to any school in the nation. They are not tied to a college that ROTC assigned them to for the scholarship.
AROTC grads can go Reserve or Guard. AFROTC and NROTC must serve AD.

The Devil is in the details.

Thank you all for the information, I was pretty stressed out because a cap at 18k would restrict the type of school that I would be able to go to, so this is a relief.

Would the NROTC and AROTC scholarships increase with a tuition increase?

Nobody can answer that question because not one of us sits on the DoD budget panel. It is done yr by yr. Fiscal yrs run Oct1-Sept 30, we are on FY 13 right now. If G forbid sequestration occurs I think everyone can guarantee it will be capped for the unforeseeable future. Probably can also assume IS scholarships may take an enormous hit. AFROTC 2 yrs ago cancelled ISSP. Cadets did not find out until about 30-60 days prior that there would be no ISSP for their yr. Those that selected a school with the hope of later on getting a scholarship were SOL.

I would suggest if you are concerned because you are already at the high end, enter with plan B in place where you know how to pay if it goes up. As I stated earlier for planning purposes if colleges keep at this pace expect a 30-40% difference. It is not uncommon a school to increase by 10% per yr., so right now even if that school is 16.5 TY, and it goes up 10%, next yr you will already be over the cap of 18K.

I know for a majority of AFROTC scholarship recipients they tend to get nice merit packets too from the colleges. If you look at their stats, you will see why colleges come to the table with merit to get them to matriculate.

You can use your merit and your ROTC scholarship, which is also why some kids opt 1 school over another.

The answer to your questions at this time is yes.

Clarkson you are in the trenches, regarding ROTC. I would assume sequestration is a topic of conversation, especially for GS employees of the cadre.

Do you feel in your personal opinion that there will be no change regarding ROTC scholarships, with or without sequestration?

If sequestration occurs how will it impact the dets?

Less scholarships, less training opportunities, less commissionings?

I can't fathom that with the March date and Panetta saying programs may be cut, and GS's being furloughed it will have no impact at all on ROTC. Are all of the leadership AD/Guard/Reserves, or are they also GS/contracted?

Just my ignorant opinion, but I would think one option would be re-jigging AROTC. The question is how they re-jig?

I agree FY13 for2017 recipients they are safe. I am just not sure that the DoD budget won't take a hit and ROTC is vulnerable compared to AD for 2018 applicants.
