I saw a few posts about dating in the academy but They really didn't answer some of my questions hopefully someone here can.

Here's a bit of back ground story: I'm currently in a long distance relationship with a girl. We've been successfully dating for seven months. We both want to go to the AFA I'm a senior and she's a junior. We have excellent communication and we understand our busy schedules (since we're both involved so much) and obviously since it's long distance we're already used to being apart lol.

My question is lets say I get appointed for the class of 2017 and she gets appointed to the class of 2018, what are the policies for dating in a situation like that. From what I understand 4th class cadets can't date upperclassmen so I know first year we'll have to be separated but what happens after her 4th class year.

Any tips and help is greatly appreciated!

If the Air Force wants you to date or get married, they'll "ISSUE" you a partner.

:shake: Sorry; had to go there.

To answer your question; Freshman (C4C, 4 Degree); are not allowed to date 3,2, or 1 degrees. They can date each other in the same year/grade. Then again; there really isn't a lot of time for dating your first year there. Now; once you're not a C4C any longer; e.g. C3C, C2C, or C1C, you are allowed to date up and down those 3 "Grades". At least that's the way it has been. Of course, if it's changed, someone will chime in.

Lol it's fine. But oh ok I see that sounds perfect then! Hopefully it hasn't changed much thanks for the help!

Dating at USAFA

Hi
I you all knew how many time this subject has come up. All the time that my DS has worked toward an appointment he has suffered with the input his peers have thrown at him. All the 20% girls and 80% dudes. Of the 20% girls 15% are stronger than you. 80% of girls living in Colorado are beautiful and the other 20% go to the academy. No social life of any kind, no parties, no fun, no college experance...ECT ECT.

So I thought being a smart father I would set up a meeting at the local air base with an academy graduate to tell my DS about the fun side of the academy. (See how smart I am) So we go to the base and are given a nice welcome and taken in to meet an academy graduate as well as a ROTC grad (both pilots).

The academy grad proceeds to tell my DS how miserable his four years at the academy had been and how hard it was an an engineering student and how little fun he had at the academy.

So we left there with my DS second guessing his desire to enter the academy. This only changed after his visit to the academy and speaking to his fellow baseball players on the team.

But still to this day when his friends come home from college they still rib him about his choice and he gets quiet around the house until they return to college.
Regards
John

Not to sound insensitive but you are pretty young and long distance relationship for people that are older fail very often especially when you are thrust in two totally different lifestyle changes. Seven months is a drop in the hat to most people here to be honest and you should be more concerned about your appointment rather than a high school relationship. This is a point in your life (as it is for many after HS) where people go their separate ways and do what's best for them. I have trained in Colorado Springs and originally from the Denver, I assure you that you will have no problem socializing when you are on leave or there is a pass weekend. All in all I guess I am saying you don't know where you and your gf will be a year from now so just focus on you and what it takes to get an appointment.

When I was in ROTC a I dated a Senior when I was a Sophomore :shake: and there wasn't a problem because during training periods she just acted like I was another cadet. For the AFA I think your original question was already answered haha

Dating at the academy

Hi
I wonder if there is any dating or dances or male female socialization at the academy. I wonder is a current academy student will tell us if dating has ever been an option and if so during what year?
Regards
John

Not sure i understand totally your question; but yes, there are dances at and sponsored by the academy. You can go with another cadet or a civilian girl/guy. No problem. There is plenty of "socialization" at the academy. As already said, you can date the first day you get there. But remember; C4C students (Freshman) can ONLY DATE OTHER FRESHMAN. Or civilians. C3C, C2C, and C1C; Sophomore/juniors/seniors can data each other/mix/match; or civilians. And finally; while dating is allowed freshman year, TIME WILL BE THE BIGGEST CONSTRAINT. Until recognition, it's not like a freshman has a lot of time.

Dating

Hi
That makes much better since to me. I understand the time constraints freshman year. The academy speaks very well on the program it offers but is a little slack in letting the future students know there can be fun as well. I understand the commitment but still they are young adults who need to let loose sometimes (in an appropriate way). A little freedom goes a long way in preventing the acting out process.

They generally don't need to advertise how fun they are as they tend to have enough candidates who apply for all the important reasons.

USAFA isn't a prison. I did so many cool things there that a few less boozey parties and drunk underwear runs than at State U wouldn't have made me change my decision in hindsight. I did way neater things.

I had a classmate in my 4 dig squadron who was in the same position as the OP. When his gf arrived as a 4 dig the next year, despite a 3-4 year long relationship, their permanent party leadership forbade the relationship and they were given strict orders to stay away from one another or risk major consequences. It was too hard to try and maintain secretly and they eventually broke up relatively quickly. You likely won't be allowed to maintain such a relationship and a year long break is unlikely to result in getting back together. That's the reality.

Also, the 2% club is a notorious comment. As in less than 2% entering with a significant other are still with them by the end.

I say with this kindness.

Seriously when you are there love interest long distance that might or might not get appointed won't be in your wheel house. Surviving BCT and C4C will be.

No offense to her, but you need to be all about you as a C4C.

Again no offense, but you are 18, that is why they call it the 2% club.

This is the time to be selfish!

Dating and Fun

Hi
See my prior post about the feedback we got when I took my DS to meet with an academy graduate at our local base. I will say it was a real downer as I had hoped for a very positive and upbeat talk. This was 180 degrees from what my poor DS got that day. It almost gave him second thoughts and was difficult at the time. Plus at 17 and 18 he got a lot of S@@t from his peers.

Not surprised, there are plenty of those out there. For every one who hated it, there were plenty of us that loved it. It comes down to the person and their penchant for making their situation work and working hard. Sorry to hear about his experience. Make sure no one else you know interested in USAFA uses them as a reference!

I hated some days and I loved some days. The bad days sucked, but the good days really were great days. Every decision has an opportunity cost.

Marines

Hi
I am ex-Navy and have to admit the Marines have the best looking uniforms going. But way to much running for my taste.
