Just wondering if anyone has heard from Senator Kerry's Office yet! I know that the nominations are due at the end of next week. My DS called his office at the beginning of January and was told that he would receive his letter shortly.

Thank you in advance.

DS still waiting, told by Sen. Kerrys' office yesterday that letters will be mailed the end of this week.

MOM5xkids,

Two questions for you if I may? Did your DS have a second interview with Kerry's office and, is the USMMA his first choice?

Thanks for the update.

I received my nomination from Kerry in yesterdays mail.

Very impressive USMC8!

But I am confused. Appointment, offer of admission, LOA, Candidate, etc makes it hard for me to follow.

Did you apply and complete applications to all five service academies?

Did you receive congressional nominations to USMA, USMMA, USAFA, USNA?

Were you offered admission to the four service academies that require congressional nominations in addition to the USCGA, the single academy that does not require any congressional input ?

Very curious because you appear to be an impressive candidate.

I applied and completed all applications to all five service academies.

I received congressional nominations to all 4 academies that require a nomination, (USMA, USAFA, USMMA and USNA) and I received senatorial nominations to USMA, USNA and USMMA.

I received my LOA from USAFA before anything else and they have yet to send me a BFE. It is kind of interesting because I received one phone call from MOC notifying me of appointments to both USMA and USNA at the same time.

USCGA was completely separate from that.

I have accepted the USNA appointment and have therefore respectfully declined the others offered to me.

I am honored and humbled by these great opportunities awarded to me and I look forward to working hard and making the best of the one I have chosen.

Best of luck to you NYBEAR

Our DS third congressional nominations came in the mail today. Senator John Kerry nominated him to the USMMA. 7th semester grade submitted, CFA test next week.

Does having multiple nominations to any service academy really increase the chance of being offered a spot in the entering class?

I ask this because I always believed that the application, with the "whole candidate score" , was much more important than a nomination from any of the political sources?

I do understand that at least one political nomination is a prerequisite to an appointment, but did not think that several political nominations increased the chance of an actual offer of admission?

Does not really increase your chances per say, but having more than one nomination simply pools you with a different slate of candidates to compete with. So in a sense, I don't believe one nomination has anything to do with the others, but rather they are all separate and it really doesn't matter how many you have, but rather how competitive you are on each of the slates.

For instance, your senatorial noms may be really competitive and you may end up ranking 2nd, or 3rd on those slates and therefore be placed in the national pool. You do, however have one last shot with your congressman who may happen to have a less competitive pool of candidates, allowing you to win the slate and therefore earn the opportunity of an offer of appointment.

So in conclusion, the more nominations you have, the more chances you have to be presented before the admissions board and compared to other slates of candidates. But, as you probably understand, nothing is ever set in stone, but by acquiring three nominations you have given yourself the best chance possible to earn an appointment. Best of luck to you.

Interesting stuff. Never knew that multiple nominations to the same service academy actually might increase the chance of an actual appointment to an individual service academy.

If one were interested in receiving appointments to the four service academies that require nominations, to maximize options, what would be the best strategy?

Let's assume that your US Senators and Congressperson require you to rank, in order of your desire to attend, each of the four academies? Should you stay consistent with the rankings on each request for a nomination from your MOCs or should you mix and match your top choice with your various politicians to further enhance the possibility of receiving offers of admissions to all the academies?

If I were you I would try to find one, maybe two of the Academies that you really really want. IMHO it is too risky to differentiate amongst your rankings. I have heard of candidates doing that and not getting nominations to their top choice just because they thought it wise to rank the academies different for every MOC. The choice is yours. If you feel competitive enough and believe you can receive a nomination from all 3 MOC's at different academies then more power to ya! But I don't see it being wise to do so.

Also I never meant that having multiple nominations increases your chances of an appointment per say, but rather it gives you a second, or maybe third chance to compete with a group of candidates on a smaller scale before being added to the national pool.

USMC8. - How were you able to receive nominations to all four academies that require them? You mentioned that your two Massachusetts US Senators gave you nominations to USMMA, USMA and USNA. Which US Senator gave you nominations to two service academies?
I thought Massachusetts was a very competitive state for service academy nominations?................... All good knowledge.

USMC8/NYSBEAR:

What USMC8 ststes may mor may not be accurate for USMA/USAFA&USNA but I am 99% sure it is inaccurate for USMMA nominations. My understanding is that for USMMA appointments everyone with a nomination from an MOC (Senator or Representative) from a particular state is placed first in a pool of just that state's nominees and competes for among the pool of everyone from that state for an LOA for that state's allocations. Then they are placed in a National pool to compete there. I'm not entirely positive how this is worked given the implementation of "rolling admissions" but I am sure you have a rank among everyine from your state. An individual MOC's designation of you as "Principle"; 1st Alternate, or 2nd alternate etc. for USMMA has much less bearing in the evaluation as each MOC does NOT have a spot or allocated number of spots at the USMMA like they may still have at the other larger Federal Academies.
