Hello all,
I applied for the NROTC four year scholarship some time back, several months ago. I had the interview and presented all required documents. I checked the application status again to yet again see the "Your packet is currently as your local coordinator" I have emailed, called, and contacted through the website. This is very frustrating as I am in the final stages for West Point and the other academies, I have already been nominated. Please offer some advice?

If your application was complete I expect you have been boarded. The website is notorious for not being updated. However, I would follow up with all contacts to make sure. There could always have been a bureaucratic mix up. Try the national contact information on the website, especially the phone, if other contacts don't work out. Another thing to try is the cadre at your #1 school. They may be able to help (or whichever school you have the best relationship with).

Any word on updated statuses? It seems to have been the average 5 weeks between the last board results.

Spoke with NROTC today and they said they are updating their portals every 2 to 3 weeks after the board meets. They are having a board this week. It doesnt seem as if people are getting results as the Lt. said at NROTC.

DS just received notice today of 4yr scholarship to U Mich as out of stater.

Stats:

Class rank: Top 2%
Merit Scholar Semi-Finalist
ACT 34 Math 36
SAT - Excellent Junior year spring, bombed Senior year December
Got A in Sophomore level Calc at local Big 10 University
Ice Hockey/Lacrosse-excellent teammate, but not superstar
Several Math/Science Awards
Community Service lacking
25-35 hrs/wk working at Best Buy computer department
Can only imagine teacher recs and ROTC interview were excellent

For those looking to have the most impressive resume for ROTC scholarship or SA appointment. Don't try too hard. Instead...

Try to be a good person, a good older sibling, a good teammate
Try to hitch your wagon to other good people
Try to get good grades
Try to help people when you can
Try to enjoy your high school years

You don't have to always honor your "lame" mother and father. Just cut them some slack from time to time.

The rest will take care of itself.

Best of luck to all.

Thanks Grunt. He's doing Navy option. Please don't hold it against him.

Well.... the Marines do need someone to drive them where they are going!

does anyone have any idea how many scholarships are left? have most of the scholarships already been awarded, or have a majority not yet been awarded?

Thank you

Congratulations! Is "bombed"a good thing in this context?
And great advice at the end. He sure sounds like an outstanding young man.
Honor, Courage, Commitment!

In this case, bombed is bad but DS did not freak out. He knew that what is done is done and that it was not a reflection on him as a person. It was a lesson to always prepare and to take nothing for granted. All the handwringing and recriminations would have done nothing to change the outcome.

Absolutely correct. And he already had those excellent ACT scores in the bag anyway.

how does the NROTC scholarship notification come down?

cb7893, how did your son find out he had received the scholarship? Was it only via email? Did the Navy scholarship status on the website change? Reason why I ask, is that up until yesterday my son's website had the standard one or two sentence statement, something to the effect, "your application is at Naval Training and Education Command..." and as of today it now shows a snapshot one page overview of his app: school's applied for, SAT scores, etc. I don't know if he's checked his email yet either the past couple days (I'm deployed).

Anyway, just a hopefully dad here. Congrats on your son's offer.

mud,

Let me first thank you for your service. Being deployed would add a whole layer of anxiety to the college application process which I don't even want to think about.

The progression went something like this:

Early to mid Nov-DS had everything submitted. Within a day or two, the recruitment contact had DS correct a couple of things, like getting originals vs. facsimiles, including in-state school in top three, etc.

Late Nov The "chief" confirmed that the app was complete and the status page changed to the simple two line statement about the App being complete.

Mid Dec-The status page changed to the one page snapshot you referred to. I never inquired why the change. Throughout the process I gave DS reasons to call the "chief", checking dates of the board, making sure they got the transcripts from local university, etc.

Friday-Status page changed, announcing scholarship to first choice (out of state Big 10). DS also received email. Both said that official docs would arrive in the next week or two. I was thinking that some decisions were contingent on 1st semester grades not falling off the Senioritis cliff.

Bottomline, DS's status page changed like your DS's, so it is not a negative indicator.

Don't hestitate with any inquiries. DS #1 is AROTC MS II, who applied to 11 schools. Had to bulldog DS #2 to come up with 5 for the NROTC app. Have seen and heard every trick in the book from admissions departments. Also, had up close and personal experiece with several different ROTC programs.

Otherwise, posters like Pima, Kinnem, and Clarkson among others, are both knowledgeable and on the spot.

Best of Luck to your DS and best wishes to your entire family.

P.S. Is your screen name an indicator of roots in Toledo?

mudhen, thanks for your service.

I have never heard of this type of change before in my 2-3 years hanging out on these boards. I'm hesitant to surmise as I don't want to inspire false hope and I may be totally wrong... but with that warning up front here's my surmise anyway (and it's only worth what it cost you).

The whole scholarship selection process is a mystery, especially Navy's, but I once heard it explained this way... THE board reviews the packages and decides who will get a scholarship. Another, totally different, group of folks then decides which school(s) the scholarship will be awarded to. If that's the case then there must be some change in status in the application between the time its decided to award a scholarship until the details of that award are determined. Perhaps... just perhaps... this change became visible in your cases, either inadvertently (software error?) or regular changes to the process.

Again, I want to emphasize this is just a guess and is made in part based on the changes cb7893 saw in his son's application prior to his scholarship award.

Hoping this is good news for your son. :thumb: In the meantime I'm wondering if he's following in your footsteps. Are you Navy as well?

U of M

DS just received notice today of 4yr scholarship to U Mich as out of stater.

Congratulations!

If you have any questions about U of M NROTC, feel free to ask and I'll help if I can. My DS is 4/C, class of 2016 at University of Michigan.

We can PM if you would like.

Thanks Jiller.

Unfortunately, DS has prickly medical issue. He was kicked in the eye with a soccer ball before Thanksgiving. No permanent damage, but it will be a DODMERB issue. And Mich would be a stretch for us as out of staters. So...

Champagne remains corked, fingers super-glued in crossed position, swinging dead chickens three times around, applying for scholarships, leaving all options open, no stones unturned. Well, you get the idea.

When it comes to this stuff, DS is an absolute Zenmaster. He will accept the hand he is ultimately dealt, but I know he has planted his heart on that North Campus, somewhere between the Baja Racing Team Garage and the Naval Architecture Lab.

mudhen, My DS' page changed in the same way you described at about the same time you said your child's did. Other than that change to a synopsis-type page, no other word.

Mud,

My DS's page stayed with the 2 lines forever, until the past month. After new year's, it switched to the synopsis as you describe.

Last Friday, Vanderbilt/4yr popped up. We are thrilled he has his 3/4 choices.

Best of luck to yours, regards.
