Visiting USCGA around March/April for 24hr cadet experience.
What's not to miss around New England that "out of towners" can do or go to while we drop our kid for the overnight stay? We're flying into Boston and driving to USCGA. Appreciate any tips.

Mystic Seaport is nice, and down-town Mysic is loaded with great places to eat. Try Capt. Daniel Packer Inn or The Oyster Club just down the street, and of course S&P Oyster on the river is THE tourist spot. Have your picture taken in front of the Mystic Pizza sign (but stick to seafood in Mystic).

Directly across the river from USCGA is the Groton Submarine Museum with the USS Natalus (I think I spelled that wrong). Very nice place to visit and be sure to look at USCGA campus through the para-scope.

March-April can be cold and windy -- it was when our daughter Bean Sprouted -- but if the weather is nice hike the Rocky Neck State Park seas shore. If it s cold, stop in at the Griswold Inn for a bowl of chow-da in Essex, CT.

Stay away from downtown New London after dark. The exception is Tony D's restaurant -- always good food there -- and One The Water which has good food and looks out over the Thames River.

Tony D's haha, i haven't heard that in awhile. There are a few place to eat in New London, but for the most part, downtown New London isn't very promising.

One side comment, it's "Coastie" not "Coastee".

Mohegan Sun is 15 minutes away, and Foxwoods isn't much farther than that either.

I'll throw my two cents worth in.....Just down from the Academy is a great bar/restaurant called Mr. G's. Good food and you might encounter some cadets in the dining area. Our son is a 3/c and we haven't missed a visit to Mr. G's since his 4/c year. Go Bears Crew!!!!

Mr. G's is a classic.

When I was a cadet we also had Tiger's. LOVED TIGER'S! She was on AIM (AOL Instant Messenger), so you could IM her your order. She was great. Sadly, they closed. :frown:
