Qualified Candidates?

I was looking at the profile of the class of 2016 that my ALO gave me during my interview and I noticed that there was a category that said "Qualified Candidates" and that there were 2331 of them last year, then it stated that there were 1214 offers of admissions.

I currently have my application complete, I am medically qualified, and have a nomination. Does this put me in the qualified candidate section?

Also I've heard that my MOC will call me if I receive an appointment before it will appear online/ in the mail. Is this true?

Thanks

Being a qualified candidate means you are Triple Qualified in three main areas determined by various factors. The three areas are Medically (cleared by Dodmerb), physically/athletically (determined by successful completion and passing on your CFA) and scholastically (determined by admissions based on GPA, SATs etc..). Based on what you have said, it seems to be that you are in fact a qualified candidate. Also, usually those who receive nominations will be qualified scholastically and you already said you are cleared medically and based upon your application being complete then you must have passed your CFA.

So, long story short, assuming this is all true in your case, you are a fully qualified candidate eligible to compete and receive an appointment. As you know, however, you are not guaranteed anything and now the waiting for you begins.

Also, different MOCs around the country handle their candidate selection and notifications of appointments differently. Usually what happens is the Academy Admissions board chooses the candidate to receive the appointment, calls the MOC to whom they have slotted the candidate, and gives that MOC time to call his candidate and congratulate him. I have heard of MOCs who do and MOCs who do not. In fact, I was lucky enough to experience the former option. Received the best phone call of my life.

Good luck to you my friend.

Thank you very much! According to last years stats I now have about a 52% chance to get an appointment!

I probably wont be able to stop myself from checking my application page multiple times a day, but its nice to know that I could be getting a personal call.

Just to keep the jargon correct, USAFA doesn't use the term 'Triple Qualified". If the Academy deems that you meet the criteria in all areas you will be a "Qualified Candidate"

Spacetrent, it appears that you are on your way to being a Qualified Candidate. You need to have your CFA completed and your scholastic record must meet the requirements of USAFA. Your application portal should change to "Qualified Candidate" , then you will know.

The notification of appointment can happen may different ways. The MOC is given time to do it, but they do not always follow through. My son found out when the BFE showed up. His Senate and Congressional nominators never contacted him.

Hey Stealth, quick question. I'd imagine admissions would have to review your profile in order for them to select you as a "Qualified Candidate"? I'm just wondering if it takes a bit of time for them to select you as qualified after you've completed your application.

I was wondering this too, my application still says that I am a "Candidate". And I don't believe that any of my areas were low enough to not earn a qualification (32 on ACT, met or exceeded almost all of the CFA scores, cleared by DoDMEB)

i was wondering too if it actually will say "qualified candidate" as opposed to candidate because i have been in the same boat as you for quite some time now. all this waiting is making me crazy:yllol:

If I remember correctly, last year the portal just went from "Candidate" to "Appointment Offered". There was no "Qualified Candidate" status shown.

Thanks for the insight, Blackbird. That was making me a tad nervous.

Last year our senate nominator didn't call, we saw the portal change to 'appointment offered' before we got the BFE. We had a ceremonial click of the 'accept' which was quite momentous. It has been a roller coaster ever since. I remember being in your positions last year. Full of anxious waiting and not a day goes by you don't think about it. Nothing anyone can say will make it go any faster. Good luck to you all and hope to see many of you next year.

Thanks everyone, I fell a lot better now. Guess I'll just have to be patient, as hard as that is

I don't think the portal will actually say qualified candidate, because I currently have an LOA and nom but my portal still says candidate.

My DD did not receive a phone call or have an LOA. In Dec. she received her appointment in the mail to USAFA. Her application stated Candidate then went to appointment
Best of Luck !

Thanks for the corrections to my comments. This is why I am glad we have new people all the time. My memory fades!
