Does USMA take into consideration on whether or not you have applied for ROTC? For example, will your chances to get accepted to USMA be hurt by not applying to ROTC?

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but ROTC does not impact your application. However, be aware that you may get asked (during a nomination interview, etc.) if you have also applied to ROTC. If your answer is no, they will normally ask why not.

ah ok thanks. I was just worrying that it might have a affect on my possible appointment.. Because I was planning on joining the national guard for experience after college or try to do OCS.

joining the national guard so I can still serve my country? One of my coaches is in the national guard and was deployed. Hearing his stories I also want to gain experience while serving my country.

If that makes any sense...

That's certainly admirable and honorable. But I have to ask why you wouldn't consider ROTC? You can join ROTC without a scholarship and compete for in-school scholarships (if you didn't know). You would also commission as a 2Lt upon graduation and successful completion of the program. Of course, if the school you plan on attending for plan B doesn't have a ROTC detachment then it's kind of difficult.

If you go to USMA or complete ROTC, you won't be able to join the national guard for at least 8 years after graduating...that's what has me confused

You can be in the National Guard while you are in college. It will be challenging, but should be good for you. Beside serving our country and your state, you should get some good life experience and some college money. Might have to take a semester off to complete your militar training. In theory you can complete your basic and advance training during summers, but certain military specialties the advance individual training is several months.

If the OP goal is to go to USMA, then why not have ROTC as his/her Plan B for commissioning?

If i have the honor of getting accepted to USMA, I will of course go, but if not I would like to have the opportunity to join as a enlisted soldier to gain the experience which I am sure is different from being a officer. But the SMP program sounds interesting thanks :thumb: Frankly I am not too aware of the various programs out there etc.

So basically, I did not want the fact that I did not apply for rotc to raise a question of my intention to become an officer and serve.
Thanks Everybody!

No problemo. I would support whatever you want to do to serve your country. However, I think it would be wise to explore ALL your options. I have no dog in the fight but it just seems smart to me to explore all the programs and then make a decision. NG may be absolutely the right thing for you, and if it is, then do it.

I never thought of that. I had always considered the ROTC, one of my 2 back-ups, but that is something to think about. I will definitely apply for ROTC too. I do have one question, when do you need to start applying for ROTC? West Point starts so early. I have two years to think about it, but I am already just about driving my mom crazy with this.

You should start your application in Feburary of your junior year in high school. For 2014/2015 scholarships, applications open Feb 10, 2013.

You can commission straight into the NG or Reserves through ROTC. SMP is a parallel route for GFRD destined cadets or a leadership experience for those eventually wishing to go AD.

I have thought about that too, but I am really focused on getting into West Point right now. I know how you feel, though.

Okay, thanks. That is good to know, I had wondered that. I really think I can get into West Point though (I hope), so hopefully I won't need that, but it is definitely something to think about. Well, I can probably get into West Point if I will get off the computer and back to my school work so I can work out this afternoon...
