I have received a conditional guarantee of appointment, have since completed the requirements, and have been informed that I will feceive my qualified offer by the end of February. I have also been invited to attend a CVW. I have already been out to Annapolis, as well as USAFA SS. Do I need to attend a CVW? Is there any admissions reason to go or is it simply to get a feel of the place?

Attending CVW gives you an inside look at the day to day life of a mid. You don't experience that on a tour or during SS which is held in the summer when classes are not in session. You follow an assigned plebe and see exactly what they do each day. You also will have an opportunity to talk with many current mids and gets their views on what they like and dislike.

The decision to join the military is a BIG deal and life-changing commitment, I would recommend every opportunity to experience USNA before I-day.

If you can make the travel arrangements easily, then I highly recommend going. It's unlike anything else you've experienced thus far.

Really No Need

There is no need to attend CVW. It is also not a requirement for an appointment. That being said, there are many benefits from attending, such as getting exposure to an actual day-in-the-life of a midshipman. But for my son, there was something intangible and that was increasing his comfort level for USNA. My son knew he wanted to go to USNA since his first visit in the summer of his freshman year. By the time he checked into I-Day, he had attended STEM, NASS, CVW, 2 wrestling camps and a football game. After each visit he felt more and more "at home" with USNA. When I-Day came around, he knew he was at his new home. Was CVW critical? Probably not, but going did have some benefits. How much, it probably depends on the individual. But it can't hurt to go, follow a plebe around, observe and ask questions. Cheers.
