Hello everyone. Now that the scholarship applications have close for next year (and according to last years timeline), I am hopeful that the board for the NROTC Nurse Corps. Scholarship will meet soon. As such, I thought I would create a thread for applicants to post their stats and discuss the program. Also, when the time comes, hopefully those that are lucky enough to get a scholarship will post here.

Ok, I'll start.

I am a California female.
4.0 unweighted GPA
4.33 weighted GPA
Editor-in-Chief of my school newspaper (which I've been a member of for 3 years)
Camp Counselor every summer at a day camp for kids ages 2-6
I babysit regularly and work at my temple every Sunday.
I am a member of our schools GSA and CSF.
I will have a Biliteracy seal for Spanish on my Diploma.
Composite score for ACT: 32.
I have volunteered 350+ hours at our local hospital
My weak spot is my lack of athletics, but I have been working out continuously to get up to NROTC standards.

My schools list:
University of Michigan
University of Virginia
San Diego State University (Accepted)
University of Utah (Accepted with full tuition scholarship)
University of Pennsylvania

I completed my application in September and I look forward to getting the results from the board. Even if offered a scholarship though, I know I will probably get DQ'd and require two waivers.

For Army I would say you are a shoe-in considering the attrition rate for nurses in AROTC and your stats, but I can't speak for the Navy and I do not know of anybody on here who knows much about NROTC- Nurse option. Hopefully someone else who knows more about Navy nursing will chime in...

Navy Nurse Corps

Sister is 2C MIDN in NROTC Nursing. Word is this year there will only be 40 Nurse Corps scholarships awarded. Extremely competitive. Best of luck to you!

My DD is a NROTC nurse option in her first year. I can’t speak to this year’s board but would be happy to answer any questions about her experience. I will say she was not awarded a school on her top five list but has been happy where they sent her. She originally wanted AFROTC nursing and was torn on whether or not to take the Navy route but with some guidance from this board and the unit she was placed with she has been pleased. Good luck.

DD is a Junior in HS and is considering NROTC Nurse program. Can anyone provide any insight as to the size ( i.e how many NROTC nurses) at the NROTC Nurse units on the East Coast or Midwest?

I know my son's unit in an east coast state has 7 midshipmen who are majoring in Nursing. I do not know how many, if any, are on scholarship.

@Aglahad: Unfortunately, I did not apply to AROTC. Thank you for your reply though.

@pfhsfco: Wow, that is extremely competitive and good information to know. Thanks! I'm hoping for the best. How does your sister feel being in the battalion, as nurse midshipmen are in the minority?

@mingram: Congrats to your daughter. Was she awarded a scholarship at the first Nurse Corps. board? Do you mind sharing her stats? Does she enjoy her battalion?

Any other applicants on the forum?

*edit: I forgot to mention I am also Secretary of my youth group's governing board.

Well if for some reason the Navy doesn't work out try looking at the Army. For some reason a lot of the applicants on this board either just go Army or are grouped AF/Navy applicants with some CG thrown in. Usually I would just say to each their own in terms of military branches, but when it comes to nursing/medicine I think Army has the clear upper hand in terms of shear numbers, training opportunities (all the various nursing speciality courses), advanced education and base placement. I am an Army RN and can tell you, from what I have seen first hand, that the Army's nursing support and advancement structure is unmatched. This is of course just something to consider and not an attempt at a recruiting tagline or anything. ;)

Does the board only meet once to determine scholarships for the NROTC scholarship for the nursing option? I applied as well, I am just not extremely familiar with the proceedings that will take place over the next few months.

I believe there is only one board but as with all things about NROTC boards it's extremely secretive and us mere mortals don't really know for sure.

My daughter is in her second year at college on the east coast, and is receiving the NROTC Nursing Scholarship. From what she has told me out of the 5 colleges that make up her unit, maybe but not always they will get no more than 3 awarded the scholarship each year for her unit. Her freshman year there were only 2.
I wish you and all of the others the best of luck. I can truely say my daughter absolutely loves what she is doing.

Thank you all for your assistance. It seems like a great program for those that want to serve and also pursue a career in medicine.

"@mingram: Congrats to your daughter. Was she awarded a scholarship at the first Nurse Corps board? Do you mind sharing her stats? Does she enjoy her battalion?"

She was awarded/notified of the scholarship last December, but I don’t think it’s fair to compare the two years because of what’s happening with the budget, even her year was different than the one before. As for her stats she was not quite as strong as you academically but was a four year athlete.
I think "Enjoy" is a strong word for most ROTC freshman but she says they have been fair and she is learning lots. She seems to be having a much more positive second semester than first. One thing she has seen from visiting different units is each unit’s atmosphere is different and their approach and emphasis on physical training, classes, drill team, uniforms etc. varies quite a bit. Her biggest adjustments have been time and information management. Time issues are because she is at a crosstown school so she spends about an hour a day commuting and some days makes the drive multiple times. She is also the only freshman nurse and there is only one other nurse student in the unit so she has had to search out the information she wants/needs herself, which is not necessarily a bad thing just different than the other midshipman.
Speaking from a father’s prospective it has been a great year for her; she is truly independent and responsible for herself and her future and has grown both physically and emotionally.
I Hope this helps, I asked her if she had anything to add to this post and she said to tell you “run, be patient, run, enjoy your senior year and run.”

I am in the same boat when it comes to athletics as well. While I have made it a priority to stay in shape throughout high school, school work, volunteering, and working two jobs has kept me too busy to commit to being a school athlete. We can only hope this doesn't count against us too strongly!

Unfortunately, my portal changed today informing me that I did not receive a scholarship.:frown: Now I'm working on plans B, C, and D. This forum has been an outstanding resource though, and I still hope this thread can help those who applied for the Nurse Corps. scholarship.

Sorry to hear the news. Just curious if NROTC as a college programmer is in the mix for your backup plans.

At this point, I am definitely considering all of my options (with College Programming as one of them). However, I'm going to wait until I get all of my college acceptances/declines on April 1 before I make my final decisions.

That is absolutely the right approach. Good luck! :thumb:

I just thought I would update you all: I chose a university to attend next year that I know I am going to love (I already love it). However, despite the fact that the university I chose has NROTC, it does not have Nurse Corps. Even though I originally did not really consider it (for some reason), I am now in contact with the cadre of the AROTC battalion at my school, and I will join that as a college programmer (so long as everything checks out with DoDMERB).

Being at the right school is probably the most important thing in this. Good luck with Army nursing. I'm sure you'll find it challenging and fulfilling. If all works out a screen name change might be in order. :thumb:
