Hi
I opened up a Facebook page for the USAFA class of 2017. I hope that as you accept your appointment you will visit the page often to get to know your fellow appointees. I hope that it will be helpful if you can interact, ask questions, support each other and arrive on I day with friends waiting. Once you have accepted your appointment, feel free to post your picture and tell a little about yourself. My DS accepted his appointment yesterday and has posted his picture and a little information to get it started.
Regards
John

Take this piece of advice as one of the few chances he'll get to fix a mistake before it haunts him. GET RID OF THE GLAMOUR SHOTS ON THE FB PAGE. Every year the cadre get a hold of a few wonderful nuggets of pictures or fb pages (or myspace back in the day) and have fun.

Ordinarily I would have passed this on to current cadets for their enjoyment and likely passing around. I'm getting soft with age though and decided to be nice first.

The cadre in my battalion destroyed us one year by doing some recon on all of our facebooks and posting all of the embarrassing/suggestive pictures with captions at our dining-in...

Hornet speaks truth. While I am a truck guy as well as a once long time player of travel/select/HS baseball I would just put up a generic AFA picture instead of his Senior photos. It's a meet and greet for future cadets not another profile of him, if people start to post pictures later on that's great but for now just generic. :)

I'll go one step further and suggest you shut it down. While I'm sure your intentions are good, this kind of Facebook page can only cause you problems. BCT will provide plenty of meet and great opportunities.

Agree 100%. We have all seen what happens.

I'm not into the whole facebook thing, and besides, it only takes one slip-up on that site to have something haunt you for a very long time, which is probably not the best thing to have going into an already difficult BCT and doolie year.

Facebook Page

Do what you will with the page, but the cadre will have a field day with it no matter what. That's a promise. At the very least make the page private.

Did I read this post correctly...? A parent set-up a facebook page for meet-and-greet? Is the parent also the moderator (private or otherwise)? Seems to be a poor precedence in prep for the apron-string cutting that is gonna dramatically occur. The roller-coaster ride is approaching a steep slope here!

Since the page could only be 'functional' for 5-ish months...but will never be removed, I would not bother. Kids-these-days have plenty of ways to get to know each other before BCT if they are so inclined. There are existing fabulous facebook pages for the USAFA parents as well.

Welcome to the ride...!

Meet and greet

Hi
Lesson learned as I took it down. I guess Facebook was not such an issue when I was in boot camp. Wait...there was no face book or lap tops or personal computers. Thanks for helping a loving father to see the errors of his ways.

John

Facebook

John,
There are Facebook parent pages which have great information. They are closed groups and help with parent questions and concerns. The general one is My Life is Cadet Parent: USAFA Parents United. There is also usually a group for each year such as USAFA 2016 parents. Not sure if the 2017 is up yet. If you want a chuckle, go to My Life is Cadet and read, some posts are pretty funny but parents NEVER post or 'like' there as the kids would be horrified!!

Also, the class of 2015 had a pizza night prior to I-day organized by FalconFamily. It was a great time to get faces and screen names to match. It made I-Day a little easier for us parents and the future cadets had familiar faces to see. John, perhaps you want to lead this effort for the class of 2017???

meet and greet

John - I believe your son is a recruited baseball player. If that's correct, Coach Kaz generally has an event for the players (and parents who are there) the night before I-Day. So, although I think the meet and greet the night before is a great idea, you probably won't want to volunteer to be in charge.

Getting to know each other

Hi
You are correct, just got email from coach with info about dinner night before I Day. He also included other information and important dates like parent weekend and encouraged us to make reservations now.
Regards
John

John I would strongly encourage you to make arrangements for Parents Weekend now. You should plan on arriving on the Thursday because you may be able to see your son on Thursday night for a short while. Friday morning starts early about 7:30am. Good Luck and enjoy these last few months with your son!!

I just booked our Southwest flights from San Jose for PW a few minutes ago. We're flying in on a Wed and leaving the following Tues. Rates are great right now as they are having promotion. 2 tickets round trip all fees with early boarding was $540. It's not too early to book a hotel, but some hotels have longer-than-usual must-cancel-by dates.

Good word

Well, maybe I will reserve those tickets to Parent's Weekend on faith :)

Parents weekend

Hi
I made hotel and car reservations already. Mom and I are both pilots and will fly ourselves.

John

AnotherLeadMom,
Has your son received his AFA appointment? We're hoping to hear soon.

Appointment done

Hi
Yes my DS has accepted his appointment and has been reserved a space in the 2017 class. He was a recruited athlete with an LOA. We are so relieved and happy to at least get to this level.
Regards
John
