Hello everybody,
I recently checked out the weight standards for the academies and realized that I am overweight. I weigh 230 pounds and am at 30.1 BMI. I am also between 5'11'' and 6'. I'm in good physical shape and play 3 sports. The reason my BMI and weight are so high is because I lift weights 5 days a week for football. Would my weight be a disqualifier into the academies.

Could be. They'll measure you to determine your body fat %. If you're 22% or less you'll be OK, at least for Navy. I don't know what the guidelines are for the other services. BTW, for your weight and height the Navy thinks your BMI is 31-32, but what's in a chart? There have been other threads this year on this topic. If you do a search for them I'm sure you'll find additional and helpful information.

According to Navy you need to be between 196-201 lbs.

According to a body fat % calculator I'm at 20 %, but I dont know how valid that would be.

This is a website I use:
http://550cord.com/products/info.asp?ProductID=7&product=Army-Fitness-Calculator

It is not official so take the results as such.

The current entry body fat percentage is 24% for 17-22 year old males (this is a recent change). Measurement of the neck should be at a point just below the adam's apple and measurement of the belly button should be across the belly button. Waist tape should be level and parallel to the floor. Neck tape should be as close to horizontal as anatomically feasible (the tape line in the front of the neck will be at the same height as the tape line in the back of the neck).

Good luck.
