Hello, I recently was offered an NROTC Scholarship to the University of Michigan. I went for my eye exam and physical today. I failed the plate test but I passed the red/green test. I have been told that there is another test I will have to take before I'm fully disqualified. I was wondering if anyone here could shine some light on this subject for me. My deficiency isn't bad, it doesn't affect my everyday life.

thanks
Jimmy

Color vision is important in the Navy. Markers/lights are red or green to distinguish direction etc. Since you failed the plate test you are clearly deficient somewhere. I'm guessing the third test they mentioned is the Farnsworth Lantern (FALANT) Test. It was first developed in the 1950's for the US Navy, and became the standard for military color vision testing. Lots of folks who fail the plate test pass the FALANT so relax and just go with the flow. If you pass the FALANT you should be good to go. If not, I'm afraid the outlook is grim since good color vision is so important in the Navy.

Does anybody know if I will be able to take the FALANT test or if I'm totally done for now?
