Via my CoC this morning I was emailed the new OML model. There will be some very interesting changes:

Here’s the new OML model for FY14. Below are the major changes:

1. Your LDAC land navigation score is NO longer part of OML points
2. Campus PT tests points have doubled (1.69% before and now 3.5%)
3. Your LDAC PT score is 3% LESS OML points
4. The PMS MS III Cadet Evaluation Report points have doubled (6.75% before and now 11.25%)

BLUF: LDAC scores still matter, however your performance on campus for OML points has increased.

I have the powerpoint on my computer, if anyone wants it inbox me or if anyone knows how to post it on here let me know.

I'd like a copy, but apparently I can't PM you until I post here 8 more times.

Wow they just like making things easier. The reason land nav and PT held wait at LDAC was so everyone could be held to an equal standard. Land nav ( which in my opinion is a very important spatial awareness skill) helped to weed out a lot of people. The PT test standards vary wildly from school to school whether anyone chooses to like it or not and the purpose of the LDAC test was to be the great equalizer.

I tend to agree with you on the Land Nav issue, regarding the APFT, it seems from talking with both cadets and Cadre they felt the APFT was overly subjective at LDAC. One fresh LT grader would count everything while another would have some axe to grind and would not count half of what was done, I'm not sure it ended up being an equalizer. I heard Cadre members complain that they would watch some of the grading and just shake their heads. I did hear they started having NCO's do the grading last year, a big improvement and a much more even scoring, if that continued I could see the argument for keeping the APFT point value at LDAC the same.

I do think that the shift to more points being given by the Battalion as a plus, but that's just my perspective.

This is true, I too had one of those LT graders who was merciless on my pushups. One of the few times in my life I did not max. However, I'm not sure that putting more emphasis on a on-campus PT test (which could be even more subjective) is the better answer though. Adding NCOs to the grading process was a welcome addition since as a result the cycle of "cadet to LT" APFT grading bitterness ended.

Here's the link for the slide online if anyone cares to look at it. Pretty interesting on the land nav part. My question is will people just got for bare minimums then (I believe they are changing up land nav also) because it doesn't count for anything but recondo?

Talked to DS today. He said he heard LDAC may move to Fort Knox in the near future. Anyone know if that is happening?

They have been telling us that for years. Perhaps in a few years we will see a change.

My daughter also heard that. It seems to be a discussion ever since Cadet Command moved to Ft. Knox. I hope for the cadets' sake it does not happen soon. Going to LDAC during the moderate summers in the Pacific Northwest at JBLM will be a very different experience than doing it in the heat and humidity of KY in the summer.

Don't worry people will still complain even if LDAC stays at Lewis. People made it a point to tell me every day how much they hated my state. Sure it is a little cold at 0300, but the summers here beat the South any day. Granted there are a disproportionate number of cadets from the South compared to the northern (more specifically West and Northwest) states so I could see how sunny 75 degrees with no humidity would be uncomfortable. Oh wait that makes no sense...

Seriously!?! That's cooler than summer in Pennsylvania some times!!

I would like a copy, but I don't exactly get it all the abbreviations. Could I have some help understanding? Trying hard to learn.

Absolutely no need to worry yourself over the OML (Order of Merit List) this early in the game, all will be explained in due time.

Just curious, what is this bitterness you are talking about?

Prior to LDAC 2012, the record APFT was graded by freshly graduated 2LTs who had just completed the course a year prior. Somewhere down the line a graduating class made APFT grading exceptionally difficult which started a tradition of those cadets who passed LDAC to come back as graders and assume the same hard-line grading role as their predecessors. Eventually it turned into a running joke that the new LTs were just getting payback for their APFT woes the year prior. A joke only LDAC cadets didn't find funny in the least. With the switch to NCO graders this cycle of bitterness ended and we saw (if my memory is correct) an average of 10-15 point increase across the spectrum the following year when NCOs were put in to grade.

Two cents

Thanks for posting this possible changes and new OML. DS was hoping to participate in LDAC in the northwest as a dear friend is there at Fort Lewis (soon). We hope there is no change.

Personally, I believe navigation is extremely important as we look at the history of warfare and a soldier's ability to take advantage of surroundings on the ground. It can be a difference maker! Obviously physical fitness is important, but one should know a point of destination.

Could change for location foreshadow preparing soldiers for different conditions/environments of engagement?

Please PM me any insight although I would imagine DS will contact ROO and cadre for updates.

PS Still doing orienteering club competitions this spring and summer to prepare.

As someone who has lived within a stone's throw from Ft. Lewis I truly hope they keep it there but I feel logistics wise they will eventually move it to Cadet Command HQ at Knox. The terrain of the PNW/Lewis can be very difficult to navigate in. While the elevation is lacking, the dense undergrowth and general coniferous darkness makes it in my opinion more difficult to navigate than most forests in the east and south of the country.

I stand by my statement that more emphasis should be placed on the LDAC APFT and not the on-campus portion.

Like Aglahad I'm from WA state. The area has amazing summer weather:
- Typical temps in the high 70s to low 90s
- No noticable humidity
- Least amount of rainfall in July and August of all major US cities (OK, we make up for it the rest of the year).
- Very few bugs (there are some but nothing like people experience East of the Rockies)

All in all, the PNW is an amazing place to spend a summer. A very nice spot for LDAC.
