AFROTC Type-7 Scholarship Clarification

I have done my own researching and cannot seem to find my own answer to this question. The way a Type-7 scholarship is defined on the AFROTC website is confusing to me.

I live in Illinois, and I received a 4-year type-7 scholarship. If I go with AFROTC it will be at the University of Illinois which has a tuition rate of $16,754 per year for in-state tuition in my desired engineering major, and there are fees of $3,500 dollars per year. How much will my 4-year type-7 scholarship cover?

I don't know the answer. But I know how to get it. Call the unit, introduce yourself, and ask them. They will know and you should be in contact with them anyway, right? And then post the answer here for everyone's benefit! :thumb:
 
Your Type 7 will cover all of the $16,754 per year tuition and probably most of the $3500 in fees. I say probably because without knowing specifically what the fees are for, I can't say for sure. Again, more than likely all of the $3500 will be covered by your Type 7 HSSP.

Keep in mind that you still need to contract and pass a PFT AFTER you start school before you will see any money from AFROTC....and that includes your book allowance. Budget accordingly.

From what I was told by my ALO (he also gave me my AFROTC interview), the 4-year type-7 scholarship will cover all of my tuition for all four years at U of I College of Engineering. Unfortunately, it will not cover the $3500 in fees. The University of Illinois does not provide assistance for the $10,000 per-year room and board, so that in addition to the yearly fees will be a large chunk of change out of my pocket. Does anyone have advice as to any other possible scholarships for which I could apply that would help me out with this?

Both the federal and state level govt. offers financial aid. You could start there if you haven't already. I know that College Board offers their own scholarship.

... ummm I also use scholarship.com

I would also like to throw in your school's guidance office. There's generally a chunk of scholarships/related info you could find out from them (at least for my school that is).

Quick note: don't discount the local scholarships - you will be facing significantly less applicants in that respect in comparison to nationally awarded scholarships.

These are all the places I've stepped in. Hope it helps. Congrats on the Type 7!! Be proud that you are one of the very few who will have a scholarship freshman year!
 
I got a type-7 last year and I was also confused about what it would cover. Basically it's the same as getting a type-2 or type-1, just for instate. It covers all tuition and most fees.

You should talk to your Scholarship technician as your ALO probably won't have the information your looking for on hand. Mine was extremely helpful when I was figuring things out.

You should be able to find out who that is exactly on the AFROTC website I think, it's categorized by last name. It's also listed in at least one of the letters they send you.

I agree with this post. Your ALO is probably not your best source of determining what is covered by your Type 7 HSSP. I would recommend that you call the AFROTC Detachment at UIUC. They will have a much better understanding of what fees are covered and which are NOT. My personal experience is that most are.

I will try to contact my scholarship technician after school tomorrow regarding questions about fees, and then I will post what I am told.

I have been thinking about the following question for a few days now. Originally, I had hoped for a type-2 scholarship, just assuming that the second scholarship would be better than the third (I have been focused on my Academy application, so I have not researched the AFROTC scholarships as much as I probably should have). Am I wrong in being thankful now to have received the type-7 scholarship in my situation (choosing an in-state college where tuition combined with fees exceeds $18,000) over the type-2 scholarship?

Perhaps, if it's an in-state public school.
 
kinnem is correct public is the key word. If the private costs more than the public you would be back to converting the Type 7 to a 2 for 3 yrs.

Also as it has been said before check into the fees they will cover.
 
You should consider going to West Virginia University with your Type 7 scholarship. WVU allows Type 7 scholarship winners to attend even if they are from out of state. The Type 7 Scholarship covers up to the in-state rate here in WV, and then the university waives the rest of the tuition and fees. On top of that, they provide free room and board to AFROTC scholarship winners as well.

I'm from Maine, and I decided to come here because my only other option was the University of Southern Maine...which is a small school, and I would have had to commute to the University of New Hampshire for all of my ROTC obligations. Needless to say, coming here has been a great choice.

If you're interested in engineering, this school has an excellent program. If you're a sports fan, the teams here are pretty good - we just started in the Big 12 this year. The ROTC detachment also has a pretty good record at getting people into field training and rated slots. PM me if you want any more info.

P.S. - I'm pretty sure the University of Kentucky has the same deal WVU does for Type 7. I visited them 2 years ago when I was awarded my scholarship. They had the deal back then, so they might still have it today as well.

I spoke with the AFROTC detachment, and I was told that the type-7 scholarship is capped at $18,000. It is essentially a type-2 scholarship for in-state only, according to what I was told. This is why when I asked if the type-7 scholarship would cover the university's $3,500 in fees, the representative said, "Yes and no." It will cover the fees above the $16,754 up to a total of $18,000. That means I'll just have to pay for $2,254 in fees plus room and board. This is all what I was told by the detachment.

That makes sense. At least the fees you pay will be tax deductible.
