Any thoughts on the AFROTC type 1 scholarships? Can a four year scholarship be taken away? I know that, bad behavior, poor academic performance are a given. More concerned about budget cuts.

Do any of the technical majors preclude a flight slot. I know, in my day, an engineeriing major was not going to fly, they were going to be commisioned as engineers.

Do many Cadets struggle with the gpa requirements. Thoughts?

Currently Electrical and Computer Engineer majors are not a rated slot guarantee compared to even non-techs. These majors are consider critical manning for ADAF.

They can be taken away, even before the budget cuts. The fine print in the scholarship is they must become a POC. They need to be selected for Summer Field Training (SFT) sophomore yr in college (AS200), but IMPO many AFROTC scholarship recipients also have merit scholarships from the university. The colleges typically require a 3.0 or 3.2 min cgpa to maintain the college scholarship, hence their cgpa is typically in the cgpa rate for selection regarding SFT. It would not be my fear.

Scholarship is blind for SFT selection. No points awarded for them compared to non-scholarship cadets. Tech majors get an edge for SFT selection.

Yes, many have issues with the cgpa because IMPO the college or the major were not a good fit.

If your child has a Type 1 Tech it is important to understand to change the major he will need approval from AFROTC as soon as he contracts. Tech to tech not so hard, tech to non-tech different story. CE or EE might be even harder due to manning issues.

Hope that helps.

So on the flipside - say that next year I decide to switch from say Aerospace engineering to CE/EE - would that increase my chances of getting a 3 year IS scholarship vs applying for a scholarship for Aero Eng?

Also, if I decide to switch from any major (tech or non-tech) to CE/EE, does the chances of being awarded scholarship vary from that non-tech -> tech & tech -> tech (... if that makes any sense).

Not necessarily, a lot will go into the equation, just like the HSSP. Don't switch majors just for the chance of a scholarship, switch because you want to major in that field.

You don't know when MPC will take those fields off critical manning, but for all you know it could be next yr., and than you switched to a major just to chase a scholarship, and meanwhile MPC could put Aero on the list.

Sequestration is going to impact ROTC.
All areas within AETC could be impacted by sequestration. There will be substantial cuts to funding for national advertising for recruiting and commissioning programs such as ROTC. Professional Military Education and Readiness training quotas will be reduced. Advanced pilot and instructor training courses will be curtailed beginning April 1 in order to protect initial flying training, which is expected to stand down in late August or early September. If Congress fails to act and the automatic cuts are enacted, AETC will start implementing actions as soon as March 1.

As you can see by that news release from the AF, it would be unfair to guide anyone, in any manner, except to say...major in what you want to do, and enjoy.

Thanks for the information Pima! Not planning on switching - but just wanted to know, in the event that Aero doesn't work out for me :)
