Granted, I'm not a parent, but I feel like this should be very low on the list of things to be concerned about.

I haven't even seen the policy changes yet. So while this makes good fodder for MLIC, let's see what actually happens first...

I was just wondering if any Parent's are concerned with the new SAMI/AMI standards regarding non-military items being kept in the dorm rooms? My 2014 Cadet is annoyed because after finally getting some freedoms and the ability to almost have a normal life, it's starting to be taken away again. Example, having the ability to have a vehicle and now get out and do things like golf on the weekends when they have some time, there's now no place to store golf clubs except in said vehicle - almost asking for theft when the car is elsewhere. Also, I was wondering about the items that they have finally been able to have ie: refrigerators and next year televisions. Are these items to be denied now? Has anyone heard any other things about this?

OH NO!

"But maaaaaa, I can't have my golf clubs except in my vehicle!!!"

"Now son, you just be happy, 2/c cadets at the Coast Guard Academy can't even have vehicles. Nor can they have clubs in their rooms without special permission"

"But maaaaa, Coast Guard Academy isn't even real!"

"Now son, watch your mouth. Cadets went to school there 75 years before your service even existed!"

"By maaaaaa, golf."

"Now son, anywhere you're stationed with have a golf course, plenty of time to golf, so hush up."

That's how this entire conversation should go.

It would be nice to know what the new guidelines are. I was just getting ready to mail my son's Recognition package. Now, I hesitate.

Okay. That was pretty funny.

Every once in a while, I have to say something that appears to come across as sarcastic, insensitive, rude, etc.... It's not; it's "Just my nature".

The original post; doesn't matter what the subject is, if it's been deleted, or the reason writing it; basically asks: "Are any parents concerned........"

Ok; here comes the reply which will come across by some as sarcastic, insensitive, rude, or whatever. "I'm preparing those who might take it personally".

Unless the topic you are talking about is "ILLEGAL", "IMMORAL", or directly affect the "HEALTH" of your cadet; it DOESN'T MATTER if you are concerned or not. It's NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!!!

You are NOT THE ONE in the military; at the academy. If your son/daughter has a concern, THEY WILL CONFRONT IT!!! It's NOT YOUR BUSINESS to be involved in academy policies, rules, decisions, etc... Again; unless something is going on that is "ILLEGAL", "IMMORAL", or affects the "HEALTH" of the cadets; it's NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!!!

Well, I had a nice post written...and then decided that I wanted to be a bit more respectful so I'll leave it to one word:

REALLY?

I guess the commandant wants to make it like the corps of cadets at A&M. Pretty soon they will be wearing the high boots. My 2014 was a bit perturbed too but I told you only have 14 months, and this probably won't be the last thing that you dislike about the military.

Particularly at a US Service Academy, I think it is the job of parents to, um, butt out, as much as possible, and concern oneself only to such issues as "My kid has surgery, and is expected to be hospitalized for a number of days. may I visit or call?" and "Junior is on academic probation. Any suggestions as to how hard I should try to kick his butt from 2500 miles away?"

Carry on.

They'll figure it out.

If someone's life is at risk, sure, be vocal and get the problem addressed. This, however, is about golf clubs and college dorm rooms.

Military leaders make dumb decisions sometimes, and the cadet wing leadership is no different. Let your cadet vent, if they feel like it, then ask them what they can learn from the experience.

Space rocks are falling from the sky. North Korea playing with nuclear explosions. Popes and Cardinals are losing their jobs. The fiscal cliff is looming. Furloughs and pink slips are in the horizon. The F35 is over budget and grounded.
And then they disallow non-military stuff such as golf clubs during SAMI?
That's outrageous!

My first comment was a joke. So please don't take it any other way. Something like this comes up at every academy, fairly regularly.

When I was a cadet we had trunk room issues. We didn't like the rotation for parking (when I was a 1/c).

That said, your son is a 2/c cadet. He should be comfortable taking this through his chain of command. If this is an issue for him, it's an issue for others.

Let's see.....DS is getting a first rate education without having to pay for it, he gets a paycheck each month, spends most weekends skiing, is about to go on a fun spring break, will have a full time job as an Officer upon graduation in another year.... pretty tough for us to feel sorry for him.

I'll speak up for the poster. I can tell you that having a fridge in the room is a big deal. Our c4c is in an extremely competitive sport and what she is getting for food at Mitch's is not comparable to the diet that most of the athletes from non-SAs get. Without the fridge, cadets have no ability to adjust their diets to meet their own nutritional needs.

OH NO!!!

Please say no more!

I do not see the relevance of having a fridge to SAMI/AMI standards...

Obviously have not seen the food at Mitch's lately ...

True, LITS probably hasn't seen the food at Mitch's ever. But having just seen it an hour ago, I can assure you it's adequate.
