So I know that my college path is going to be international studies as a major and a language as a minor. Naturally, I'm looking at the SMCs as well as schools that have solid international studies programs-Georgetown, American etc. my question is would ROTC commitmens in the summer or year negate any possible internships/ opportunities I could get at a school like Georgetown?

For AFROTC only your summer yr as a rising jr yr is when you will go to training that is mandatory to become a POC, and more importantly if you don't go summer field training you will be disenrolled... no commissioning.

Also place in mind when you decide which college you will attend whether it is a host or xtown.

For example. Gtown is host to NROTC, but xtown for AFROTC and AROTC. When you do the visit make sure you do the commute too during the time you will be traveling via the mode of transportation you will be using. On mapquest it may appear to be only 15 miles, but in DC traffic that can be 45 mins, which when you have to be there for PT at 6 a.m. is not fun. DC traffic starts at 5 a.m.

I do know that the NROTC unit there is very good. As a parent of an AFROTC UMDCP grad, I can say the same is true for their det. too....won best large AFROTC det in the nation last yr. I believe the AROTC det has won nationals in the past couple of yrs too.

UMDCP has also an excellent international studies, and if you are in their Scholars/Gemstone/Honors program you are required to do an internship. Our DS minored in international studies, majored in govt. and he interned on the hill his sophomore yr. for Sen. Burr. during the school yr. while he was in AFROTC.

rotc/internship

OP didn't mention which branch...DS is a inter/rel. major contracted cadet with AROTC batallion and is attending AU, unit is crosstown at Georgetown. NROTC home unit is GWU, not GU, but GU students can and do participate in NROTC. Note: NROTC is not available for AU students, so if the Navy is your thing, your looking at Gtown, Howard, UMDCP, GWU or CUA. I think all schools have AROTC and AFROTC. Our son is an MSI and he is researching internships now. He has been told there's plenty of time for this by other cadets, but may try to set something up for this summer. AROTC doesn't have a summer commitment between MSI and MSII years, although there are oppportunities you might be interested in with a foreign language minor CULP, Project GO etc. PIMA is right, AU is only a few miles from Gtown but it can take up to 20 minutes by car to get there and over 45 using public tansportation, tough when you have to be there 4 times a week by 0530. MSIIIs and IVs drive the underclassmen to most batallion meetings and PT. There are enough cadets at AU so that they actually have their classes at AU. DS is also pledging a frat :frown: this semester and has very little time for anything else. PM me if you like, I'll share his contact info and you can talk to him directly, he loves life in DC

Sorry, I didn't specify that I'm only planning to do Army ROTC

The only summer requirement for AROTC cadets is the month-long LDAC (Leadership Development and Assessment Course) following your third year.

In addition to the various summer training opportunities available to contracted AROTC cadets (see Clarkson's link), I would think that the combination of being in AROTC and attending Georgetown might even expand the range of summer opportunities. Although if you were considering looking for a summer internship working for a foreign government, that might not go over so well.

I can't comment on what conflicts there might be during the school year between ROTC requirements and internships other than to say the former would take priority and you would probably have to clear it with the battalion cadre.

One thing to look into: in view of the rigorous admission standards at Georgetown (maybe not so much at the crosstown schools) the competition for a high ranking on the battalion OML (usually the primary criterion for Air Assault and Airborne schools) is probably tough.
