Flight School and Law School

Does anyone know if aviators are eligible to apply for Law school? (hopefully BR, STN, or LITS can comment in)
 
Coming from a Firstie who's only desires for graduation are to stay as far away from Flight school and Sector as possible, I am afraid I can offer you no insight my friend.

I might recommend you ask LCDR C. or LT B. they might be of more direct assistance.

Alternatively LCDR T or LCDR A in the Law Department may also be up to speed on that.

I'm sure they're eligible to apply, but could be too senior (depending upon when they attended flight school and how long they've been flying) to be competitive for a spot. I'd also hope the Coast Guard would want some return on that $1M flight school investment and not just send them off to another PG program.

Objee, any confirmation on the (well placed possibly admissions based) rumor that direct to flight school billets will be sent to 378s TDY until they get their flight school date?

haha. I know I definitely want to fly (if I'm medically qualified of course), but becoming an attorney presents a lot of interesting opportunity too. Guess you could say that I have a lot of interests! ha

Interesting idea. And not a bad one, considering the number of ensigns on 378s and how long it took for 2012 to get down to flight school

Sounds better than having them hang around the waterfront all summer.

The rumor I have heard from a source I find fairly reputible is that two flight school ENS will be assigned to Admissions (as is tradition) ten or so will go direct to flight school (give or take a few) and the rest will go TDY to get DWO qual'd prior to reporting into Pensacola.

If it's true, it's probably going to break the hearts of a few potential aviators who were banking on never getting underway again :shake::shake:

If they plan on doing that with my class next year, and I'm lucky enough to get flight, I wouldn't mind being an Eagle Ensign for the summer. I put in for half a phase of Eagle for 1/c summer anyways...

... on second thought, don't go to the clinic, that probably won't help any. But why would you squander your chance to get into the operational fleet?

I put a considerable amount of thought into it, and my decision came down to a few good points:
(1) I wanted to get a lot of hands-on experience on deck, and I knew Eagle wouldn't be inport the entire summer, unlike some cutters
(2) It'd be nice to be with more of my classmates. I definitely noticed that some of the 1/c who went by themselves didn't enjoy it as much
(3) More practical leadership...you actually get a division to run.
(4) Ties in with (3), but I'm interested in seeing 2016's continued development. It'll be neat to see more of their personalities as they become 3/c (and I want to make sure that their experience on Eagle is somewhat enjoyable)
(5) I know when my leave period will be, and there won't be the possibility of having to go underway around my leave period.

I'm hoping to do one of the non-academic internship opportunities, too. And it's only half the summer for Eagle, which is definitely bearable.
 
Alright, well I'll give you credit for having rationalized answers as to why you want to do it, but I'll counteract one or two of your points with a few of my own (just for the heck of it)

Some 1/c who went by themselves didn't enjoy it too much. I was one of those. I was on a 225' for 6 weeks this last summer out of Cordova and I did TSTA with them in Honolulu... it was a blast. You really get to mingle with the JOs and I hung out with them a lot. I still contact them regularly, everyone from the ENS, to the JG (now works at HQ and let me tell you, even as a cadet that connection has already come in useful) to my brand new LT OPS boss who is literally my hero.

Getting out into the fleet gets you away from the "Academy" experience of being underway.

Although I'll give you some credit, Eagle is more underway than chase Hall is any day. ;)
 
haha Hawaii. So many people put that down as their first choice for this summer...of course, being summer staff probably helped you get that experience :wink:
 
In all honesty... not at all. My boat was stationed out of the remotest little town in Alaska... I didn't know that I was going to Hawaii until after they gave me my orders and I called my ENS friend on the boat!
 
I'm sure you could get into law school but you may not be able to get back to flying. Another thing to consider, flight school adds 8 years to your commitment and law school adds 5 so you would be on the hook for 18 years in the CG at a pretty early point in your career/life.
