Watch for Updates

R-Day has been tentatively scheduled for 7/1 however that is now uncertain. Rumor has it 7/6, 7/7, and 7/8 have all been discussed. Watch WP Parents Facebook Page for details and updates. Your DS/DD has to accept for you to be made a member of the group.

I think A-Day is scheduled for Aug 17th however I'm not certain of that. Last year it was on August 18th (Sat). The plebes should get OPP both days but have to be back on post in their barracks for TAPS.

The moderator of the FB page (name withheld) has promised to post an update as soon as a decision is made.

Personally, I would wait for official publication from USMA Public Affairs before changing any plans. Either via Portal Admissible mailings, USMA website, or their official FB page. (Unless it's the official USMA Pub Affairs rep you are referring to)

Anything else is hearsay/rumor. No matter how well intentioned, every year there are issues with this. And yep, this may mean you have to pay more for that flight because you changed it later than you would have preferred.

the exception would be when USMA Pub Affairs utilizes an unofficial channel because they cannot update the official channel. But lately they have been very timely on official channel updates.

Once finalized the calendars and instructions will be updated on the USMA official sites. The key materials you will want to look for are:
- Planning Dates AY13-14
- Buff Card AY13-14
- R-day final schedule (Same for A-day, PPW, etc)
- Bus schedules

These should be available now for AY12-13 if you want to check them out. (http://www.usma.edu/parents Go to the resources section on the upper left menu.

Also, each class has a section. From the above link, look for classes http://www.usma.edu/Class

The 2016 page has last years R-day schedule, etc that you can scan to get an idea of what this year's *may* be like.

All that said, it's unfortunate for the 2017 folks having to deal with moving targets. That does make travel plans hard. Just wait for official before you cancel those existing reservations!!!!

Debra Dalton, the staff West Point Parent Liaison, moderates both the West Point Parents Facebook Page as well as the West Point Class of 2017 Moms and Dads Facebook page, which can be found at https://www.facebook.com/groups/308394492610571/ She has said that a decision on R-Day is coming "soon." Parents of appointees who have accepted their appointment can send a request to join the 2017 Moms and Dads page and Mrs. Dalton will add you.

These are two of the official channels I was referring to. :thumb:

2017 parents, just recognize there are also multiple unofficial channels as well. Some with very timely info, some with stale, etc. All well intentioned. And a certain amount of "My info is better/fresher than yours" dynamic.

Based on our experience as cadet parents, and also input from many others, we wait for official USMA publication before reacting. I know multiple parents burned by unofficial information!!! (Airline change fees suck!)

Even info where individuals knew someone who talked to the Comm, etc and posted on FB channels. Well intentioned, and maybe even accurate at that instant.

Deb will make it available when it's ready and baked. You don't want to act on anything before that.

This will become clear when it comes time to start making plans around holiday breaks, grad week, etc. Over time a pattern develops, but we still live or die by the published bus schedules!

Deb not only moderates those two pages, she is also a member of West Point Moms (because she is one). Our page is unofficial...but she does step in and comment frequently to give guidance when needed. We call her the command sergeant mother. :thumb:

R-Day July 1st

DS just got an email from the RC. R-Day will be July 1st.

7/1 Here We Come

DS received it too.

Does anyone know if A-Day is definite for 8/17?

^Yes, Marchback is Aug. 12; A-Day parade is Aug. 17

Parents, if at all possible you'll want to make these.

Along with PPW, some of our fav experiences so far. (Not near as exciting yuk year)

I can still vividly recall the smell of unwashed "soon to be" cadets and sour gear wafting over the hill before we even saw them!

LOL - Can't be as bad as having 8 Varsity Lacrosse boys in my van, gear and everyone and everything soaked, stinky and hot, steamed up windows and all excited because we Won the game! (FYI - it was a 40 min. drive home from the game!) :thumb:

I Bet It Is!

^^^ I can only imagine what 1100 18-23 year-old's that have been living in the field for 6 weeks, have been getting pushed to the physical limit, haven't had a hot shower in who knows how long, and who just walked 10 miles over a mountain smell like. I'm sure the smell wafts through the air, but if DS is in that pack it will be a sweet smell indeed.

but if DS is in that pack it will be a sweet smell indeed.

So it's "only" the end of CBT, and it's "only" USMA, not the real Army, and "only".....

But I was proud of every kid in the formation, smell and all. And the grads walking with them, especially the one that had to be pushing 80. It was only a few minutes, and I had grumbled about taking a week off to head up there for march back & A-day. In retrospect, would not have missed it for the world.

Just small things, but it's a transition. Very memorable, as was the A-day parade.

For the soon to be cadets, the end of marchback starts a very stressful week for them. Different than CBT, but depending on company and individual candidate, sometimes it can be harder than CBT. Heard this over and over from cadets & grads. Certainly was DS's experience.
