What is the policy about the Academy accepting college credits taken during high school? Will they accept them for credit? Or is there a way to test out of subjects?

thanks dad

But he has taken up to 20 credit hour in college during high school, if we take the time to forward the transcripts will they count toward classes needing to take at AFA I know at the university he would enter with 20 credits on his transcript before he starts.

Example chem 1, will it count toward his sciences, given he is majoring in biology or chemistry, then he can start with chem 2.

At our visit we forgot to ask this question, we were having so much fun.

You may want further clarification by having him contact his admission counselor and ask that question directly. Remember, he won't get credit but he may be able to reduce the number of General Ed classes he needs to take and open up his schedule to allow for a possible double major.

I don't think USAFA uses AP credits the same way as other colleges do. My understanding is that the cadets have to test up and out of classes. During basic training, the basics will take alot of placement tests. Many will use that time to sleep. If they do well on the tests, they can place out of subjects and go to higher subjects. They all need a full set up USAFA credits to graduate though, so it doesn't mean they take fewer classes, they just get to take electives sooner.

yes that was the answer I was looking for him to decrease the number of gen eds to move toward more Major classes. I will have him call next week. Thanks all

My DS had 80 college credits from 11th and 12th grade. No AP credits just college credits. In the end, you will be taking 4 more years of college no matter if you come in with a bachelors degree.

What xfers is really department dependent. For chemistry, they test you this coming summer. The test is very difficult and they mandate you have the knowledge. If you get all A's and college and don't do well on the test, you are taking it again. My son tested out of Chem 1 and Chem 2. But he was a 2 year college chemistry tutor. Most had to re-take the class and it was rare to skip both semesters of Chem. Getting biology credited was easier.

The math department is stricter. He did test out of Calc 1. One cadet tested out of Calc-1-4! A rare feat indeed. In statistics he got an A in college. But they said "drop in and take the final, if you do well, then it will count". He is re-taking stats.

They would not give him credit for English comp and several other generals. In the end, a total of 6 classes were allowed to transfe. Calc, Chem 1 and 2 and Biology 1 and 2 and an general english. That's less than 25 credits out of 80. In the end, he learned a LOT more in each class. Composition classes stretched him well beyond what his previous college classes. He thought the USAFA was about 25-30% harder. Faster pace, better teachers (on average), and more critical grading (again on average). He is in the scholars program. He said it is a night and day difference in expectations as well as the pace. So IMHO, the AFA has a right to be critical on bypassing college classes that were already taken. He doesn't think it has been a waste of time re-taking the classes as he is still learning a lot.

Hope this helps! :)

Thank you for the advice, we will forward the transcripts and it will be up to him to decide his class schedule. I will pass this on to him, with a major of chem/bio he might want to start at the beginning and go forward.
