Hi all,
1st post. My son was informed last night that he received the 4 yr NROTC Marine Option scholarship and will receive his paperwork next week. The officer that called him did not know what college he was placed at. My question is what would he need to do if the placement he gets is not to his first choice where he applied early and has already been accepted and committed? Has anyone else asked for transfer of placement?
Thanks for any insight and good luck to the rest of you waiting to hear.

He would have to accept the scholarship (with no legal obligation) and request a transfer at the same time (I believe it's at the same time). There is a chance he could lose the scholarship if the transfer request cannot be met for some reason. This is the reason I recommend never applying for early decision. Hope it all works out for him and congratulations!

Thx for the quick response. Hopefully he gets his first choice, but if he doesn't I just wanted to see what he would need to do to transfer scholarship

Congrats to your son!! If you dot mind me asking, what were his grades, test scores, etc? And does anyone know if all the awardees are notified on the same day, or if the results will still trickle out?

He currently has a 3.71/4.0 or a 4.85/5.0 with all Honors or AP courses, 28 ACT, 285 fitness test, 2 sport athlete (football and lacrosse), and captain.

DocM: I pulled out my son's paperwork from several years ago.

The cover letter advises that he has been selected for a four-year scholarship. It states the following four requirements:
1) Formally accept the nomination within 30 days. (no obligation is attached)
2) Gain admissision to the selected school
3) Pass physical (process is described in an enclosure)
4) Maintain present level of academic performance and personal conduct

The letter states that you may request a change in school assignment and provides details in an enclosure. It provides forms, examples, etc. The process can take three weeks and they suggest emailing during peak season.

Note: (per the form I have) requesing a change does not remove you from the original school. If changing doesn't work, your scholarship remains at the original school.

This process can (and most likely, will) go into the summer. If the change school request can't be immediately granted the student is put on a wait list. Per the form: "no wait list will show movement until after May 15th. Wait lists are worked every two weeks after that. Spaces may become available during the summer, but all spaces will be filled prior to school starting."

I hope that helps answer your question.

USMCGrunt: Thanks for the insight. Hopefully he gets his first choice, but it sounds like there is a glimmer of hope that he could switch.

I got the good news from the XO of my recruiting district this morning!!! Good luck to those who haven't heard yet.

NROTC MO

Just got the call from my contact as well.I was awarded a 4-year NROTC-MO scholarship. He didn't know what school, but he said he will know by the end of the week. He (Captain, USMC) told me that I shouldn't be worried, the hard part is over, now its more of a logistical situation. Im thrilled to get the scholarship, but apprehensive about the school choice.

mfrates: Congratulations! That is great news!

Please understand that the path to commissioning is like a 100m hurdle race. There are a number of obstacles along the way. You are out of the blocks and over the first. Next will be your physical via DODMERB. Others include successfully negotiating academics with a minimum grade point average, maintaining height/ weight standards, meeting physical fitness requirements, security clearances, successfully completing OCS and passing a final physical.

This isn't meant to "rain on your parade." Just wanted to point out that the journey has checkpoints along the way. But it all starts with the scholarship offer so congratulations once again!

still waiting here

My portal still says, "at MC district board for selection". No one who "worked" my package claims to know anything, other than "everyone is notified in April".
4.5 weighted GPA, 3.89 unweighted
top 1% of class; AP, Honors, Dual Enrollment
31 ACT
Outstanding letters of recommendation from University professors
Varsity Letters, Captain
NJROTC, battalion Commander
CAP, squadron Commander
Boys State
DoDMERB qualified
height / weight / BMI = no problem
PFT=I dont remember exact score, but my 3 miles is ~19 min, pull ups 15, sit ups max

I wasn't interested in enlisting and going into the DEP program so my recruiters didn't seem too interested in working very hard on my behalf. They "lost" my paperwork 3 times and eluded that I needed to "prove I wanted to be a Marine" by enlisting. So, I wait...

pfhsfco: Everyone reporting NROTC MO in the last week or so has gotten a call. I would bet their portal is still showing as pending. The portal is always behind.

Unfortunately, you are just going to have to wait. You may pick up something via the portal - check it often. You will eventually get something in the mail.

Sounds like you already have a few scholarships to choose from - congratulations!

DS's portal had some changes posted today. It included his contact info, school selection and advised that a decision has not been made yet which is interesting since he has received the phone call confirming that he was selected for the 4 year NROTC-MO scholarship. We were told he would receive his packet in this week which hopefully will identify school selection.

We are in the exact same mode, Cat57. From what I have read here, you shouldn't worry too much about the portal.

I also got the good news but my portal hasn't changed. Will our school be listed in the packet we receive in the mail?

Yes. The hard copy packet will show the designated school.

The portal may update anytime. You just never know.
