Nothing mailed out yet - is this a sign?

DS has four nominations: 3 Congressional and one Presidential. Am aware that one of Congressman's noms has received an appointment and one of Senators has had two noms offered appointments. DS has not heard anything and we have been told that nothing has been mailed yet. Am aware that Class is formed NLT 1 April. So, my questions are:

1. Is the fact that nothing has been mailed a sign that he has been rejected?

2. How much of a lag time between weekly admissions decisions and mailing of the BFE?

Complicating this is that we live outside the US as I am stationed in Cuba. Our mail takes two to three weeks to get here from the US.

Thanks.

If nothing has been mailed then neither has the TWE, so no he hasn't been rejected yet. I doubt the class will be complete by April 1, or even entirely by May 1.

USNA commits to notify all candidates by April 15. If you haven't heard by then or even a few days before that, I suggest the candidate contact his/her Regional Director in Admissions and explain your situation (re mail delay). The RD should be able to tell you your status.

I don't mean to seem out of line here but why does your son four nominations? I know you can apply to multiple as I did but I was under the impression that the sources communicate with each other to give everyone a fair chance. Having one candidate swallow up four noms seems like a waste. Again no offense intended...just confused.

Nominations

Each state handles nominations their own way.

I can only speak for VA, but we were told by our BGO that our Senators received over 800 applications for their nominations. The VA Senators do talk; don't give out a "principal" nomination and won't have duplicate names on their submissions to the Academies. They both submitted a list of 10 names (unranked) and let the Academies figure out who to charge to them.

In our Congressional District (VA 1) Congressman Wittman provided the Academies an unranked list of 10 names, where Congressman Cantor (VA 7) provided a “Principal” nomination. The Academies will choose form Wittman’s list, but MUST give an appointment to Cantor’s “Principal” nominations as long as his nominations are 3C (DoDMERB, CFA, Academically) qualified. VA 1 and VA 7 have a very different make of potential canidates. VA 1 has a LOT of military dependents (Pentagon, Fort Belvoir, Quantico, Langley AFB, NSWC Dahlgren, Fort Eustis, NWS Yorktown, NAS Oceana, AB Little Creek, NSA Norfolk, Fort Monroe, and I know I am missing more) while VA 7 doesn't have any. I don't mean to make it sound like only military dependents are the ones that apply, they do make up a lot of the applications.
Some states (congressman) don’t even get 10 applicants that apply and thus they might give duplicate nominations for their applicants. As you can see, each state is different and in some cases even each Congressional district might be different.

I hope you are successful and receive an appointment. Don't ever give up or let the fact that someone else has multiple nominations slow your drive for reaching your goal. You can only control what you can control. Good Luck!

Cr0ssFir3 - Not sure why. Both Senators (WV) and Congressman nominated him; who am I to look a gift horse in the mouth?

Thanks, having surfed previous posts and understanding that a few nominations from WV have received appointments, trying to read the tea leaves here. Naval Academy Admissions has a great Facebook page and are very responsive to posts and private messages. I am aware as of Monday that they have not mailed him anything. (I check every two weeks because the mail to Cuba via the APO/FPO system takes 2 to 3 weeks.)

DS is Eagle Scout, attended 3 high schools in 4 years (Naples, Memphis and GTMO), has 3.72, is 3rd in class, scored 630/710 on SAT and 26/31 on ACT, is class president. Biggest drawback for him last two years is that he attended a remote school with a very small class (13 right now) which means few extracurricular activities and no interscholastic sports.

Thus, I have two ways to look at this. On the hopeful side, a favorable decision was rendered and they had not, as of Monday, got it out. On the pessimisstic view, they are simply waiting to send out a stack of TWEs and his is in it. But, as one of the original posts said, nothing received means he is still in it. Thanks.

Michigan is the same way. I went to an interview with a Senator, then my Congressman, then had another with the other Senator. However, the Congressman notified me just a few days after the interview that I had received one of his ten competitive spots. The other Senator then cancelled on me, and I didn't get the first one's nom. either. Nice to hear that other states do it that way too, I was a little curious.

Same for MD

Maryland is another highly competitive state for the Naval Academy and the Sens appear to coordinate with Reps to maximize the number receiving noms.
In my case, I received a letter from Sen. saying his review board selected me but since I already had nom. from Rep. that they were deferring to the Rep.

From MD

Very few appointments from Maryland so far, they must be waiting until the very end.

Nominations: Illinois Senators mirror the way that Virginia Senators hand their noms. No duplicates on any slate. It makes it a bit challenging because you need to know which s.a. you want for sure way early.

The representatives are different. In our district they didnt duplicate noms because it is considered very competitive. The interesting thing here is that we were redistricted and our town edged into a new district (this district is literally the next one over.). When my son called the new congressman's office to clarify which to send his application packet to they told him that if it was for the class of 2018 his luck would be better because they never have ten kids that request and they often have years with no USMA requests at all, a couple Navy and a few Airforce. They can duplicate--again this district was literally the next one over.

I was talking to a girlfriend on the phone yesterday and she jokingly said she wished she could share one of her son's 9 nominations (to three different academies). But they live in a very different spot.

TJWJAG50: I've followed these boards for years now-and still seem in the dark. In my personal opinions (free but worth twice as much as nothing) sometimes the intangibles seem to help. so though he hasn't had some of the sports experience, perhaps his travels, geography, and life experiences boost him up. Souting can show team work and leadership and if he did well on the CFA that can show his physical ability. Rats, too bad Im not on that admission board...

How do you find out number of appointments made?

Very few appointments from Maryland so far, they must be waiting until the very end.

Aside from following the "USNA Class of 2017 Appointment" thread on this forum, how does one find out how many appointments have been made per state?

Currently the "USNA Class of 2017 Appointment" thread only shows 4 appointments from Maryland out of the 113 appointments listed. I did not think that gave a true and accurate statistic of the Maryland appointment base, as there are candidates who have received appointments who do not participant on this forum.

Thanks in advance for any and all guidance.

Wishful Thinking

In MD I know of six appts from three different districts. Four from one district alone (1 was Rep. vacancy, 1 was Prez, other 2 unknown). They let the MOC make a phone call.

The 2016 thread only made it up to 87 or so.... The count here is only a small fraction of the 1200 or so appointed.
(see thread 21742, page 23) (search for "Official Naval Academy Class of 2016 Appointment Thread")

Since I am waiting, I share "wishful thinking" but it is fading.

Just curious - do you know which MD districts the appts come from?

FWIW

Districts 01, 03, 07
At least one is Sen.
It gets complicated as to whether its Prez, V-Prez, Sen, Rep, SecNav, SuptAcad, etc..... so you can't really analyze. In many cases they let the MOC make the phone call...
In theory, ALL ten nominations from a MOC could be appointed to the Academy.
While only one will fill the MOCs vacancy and be "charged" against his five total, the MOC still tends to notify or report appointments charged against other sources such as Prez, V-Prez, unused MOCs from other states, etc.
I know of one district (that I will not name) that typically has 6 of his/her nominations get appt each year.
Last year Sen. Cardin, announced three (3) appts to USNA.
In 2010, Sen. Mikulski announced seven (7) appts to USNA.

Bottom line.... It ain't over till the TWE arrives which should be sent by April 15th. Any other analysis can be like "pissing in the wind".
