Does anyone know when we can expect to hear duty station assignments? My DS graduated/commissioned in December & leaves for IBOLC next week. Will he find out his duty station before he leaves or at Ft Benning?

Should have find out Brigade when he got IBOLC orders. Should have that already. Maybe he is trying to switch.

Some grads find out when they get their BOLC orders and some don't. Your Son is going to know well before us "experts" do.

It depends on the branch and timing. A lot of people do not get duty stations until BOLC to be honest. Some of the smaller branches such as AN have internal OMLs and can find out sooner or have more control with their duty station.

BLUF: It depends and there is no set time frame to receive orders.

Aviation Branch does not receive their duty stations until they are almost done with flight school, although flight school at Ft. Rucker is their first official PCS move.

DS is infantry...not as branch detail. He put in an ADSO for the 173rd in Vicenza which was in "pending" status in December. I thought I had read a powerpoint somewhere on the internet about a timeline which said early March. Just wondering because he was considering trading his Mustang for a 4x4 pick-up if he is stationed stateside. If he gets Italy, he's just going to buy a little beater there.

DS started IBOLC this week. He called today to say that duty stations have been released. He will be going to Fort Drum 10th Mountain div. He said it was his 4th choice but he is still happy with it because they will be deploying around the time he finishes with ranger school.

Congrats,
Try to get to IBOLC graduation, definately do not miss Ranger Graduation and get there early! Try to be there for Ranger Graduation a day early so you can take him out the day before for a well needed break. Absolutely no alcohol. Its really tough to plan because you really dont know they pass until a few days before.

Oooooooh, the big suck. That hurts.

Ahhh, beautiful Ft. Drum. Used to drive through there on my trips to and from college. Long before 10th Mt. was there. It always puzzled me as, at least the parts I saw, were as flat as a pancake. Of course the Adirondacks are right there and they are on one of the traditional invasions routes from Canada, so that's good. Hope it meets all your son's expectations!

I have only been to a handful of posts but these are the subjective opinions I have gathered from friends and peers stationed in other places. Keep in mind this is entirely anecdotal and subjective but there seemed to be a trendline consensus about posts from a wide array of people.

Good

Ft. Carson
Ft. Lewis
Ft. Sam Houston
Ft. Richardson
Schofield and Tripler
Kunsan/Osan AF base (ADA units)
Some of the German posts but I can't remember all of the names

Bad

Ft. Hood
Ft. Polk
Ft. Campbell
Ft. Gordon
Ft. Irwin
Ft. Bliss
Ft. Riley
Ft. Jackson
Ft. Leonard Wood
Ft. Sill
Ft. Knox

Mixed

Ft. Bragg
Ft. Lee
Ft. Eustis
Ft. Drum
Ft. Wainwright
Ft. Stewart
Ft. Meade
Ft. Benning

Korea is colloquially referred to as the "Wild Wild West" by a few of my friends who are over there at Casey and Red cloud

Congrats! .. on another note -- hope he likes shoveling snow, because it snows there ... ALOT.

Does he want to buy mine? I want one of those new Camaro's! :shake::thumb:

Now your talking!! A true LT Mobile:thumb:

Just kidding, I'm one to talk...my son bought a Red Mustang GT 2010, my first car was a 66 GTO built to the hilt. This is why my wife does not let me do the car shopping.

My son thought he would stand out like a sore thumb at Ft. Rucker, then he saw the cars in the parking lot, that idea went away fast, I swear to God, there was a Ferrari parked there, an older one but still, a Ferrari.

Hey, your only young once.

Of course my son said he will probably get Ft. Wainright and his car will be useless 8 months out of the year, Oh well, that'll be the time to trade for a 4x4x.

Haha well who says you can't have two toys? A Ferrari? Damn aviators!

Well hold onto the Mustang for now and just get a beat up 4x4 for those Alaskan winters. Or in true military style go out and get a lifted Tacoma, F-150 or Silverado :thumb:

On a side note my dad had a 67 Mustang fastback back in the day

Last time I was at Ft. Polk, I liked it. It's a pretty big base and only a couple hours away from some good fishing :) I wasn't in training there though. Ft. Sam Houston is kind of a crappy base, but there is ALOT to do in the area since you're in the heart of San Antonio, TX. I'd suggest doing some water tubing in new braunfels, TX if you ever get a chance to. It's a blast and only about 45 minutes away from the base. Been to a few other bases as well, but years ago so I don't remember much of them.

Like everything else, your duty station is what you make of it. DS liked Benning. He was able to meet up with many friends there for training.
