It's a bit outdated. Decent overview, but some information in there is incorrect.

Advice from my experiences:

I don't agree with the whole "packing" thing. Especially not packing extra clothing; Plebes (males, at least) are issued more than enough for use during the summer. My advice is to just bring your paperwork, phone, running shoes, and athletic gear (if you plan on playing a sport over the summer). If you need other stuff, it can be mailed. I didn't need anything other than the initial plebe issue. The less stuff you bring, the less crap to deal with.

I wouldn't spend time memorizing the rates. At all. Show up with the Mission, Administrative Chain of Command, and first three General Orders. Don't waste time and energy during your last few weeks at home memorizing that stuff.

You mentioned that you can bring running shoes and gear. Are plebes allowed to keep these things during plebe summer? Also, are they able to wear their own running shoes during plebe summer workouts or do you have to wear the ones issued?

Yes, you can (should) bring your own running shoes. Just wear them on I-day so you won't lose track of them. You'll be able to wear your own shoes throughout the summer during all PT. However, you still have to wear the issued pair with the whiteworks uniform.

Thanks! Do the majority of plebes wear their own running shoes during PT, (don't want to be that one person who stands out). What about the extra workout gear, will they let you keep that when you check in on I-Day?

We are having a heck of a time finding 'mostly white' running shoes for my DD. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Running Shoes

DS purchaced Nike Lunarglide - very light gray and white for his running shoes

Closing my USNA Class of 2017 Facebook Page

Just wanted to pass along that I was asked by USNA Admissions to close my "USNA Class of 2017" Facebook page by April 15. The good news is I started "USNA Class of 2018." I enjoy reading the comments here, and I'm always happy to help candidates.

Thank you banmom ~ that looks like a nice white shoe but we have to keep looking since the running store recommended she get a neutral shoe for her gait.

You can wear your own running shoes during plebe summer. The issued shoes were, in my opinion, rather bad. Honestly, the color doesn't matter, as long as they aren't excessively gaudy or light up when you run or something like that. The issued running shoes and trainers weren't even completely white; they were gray and blue/white, respectively.

Anything you bring that is not allowed during Plebe Summer (iPods, clocks, protein bars, etc.) will be kept for you until the end of Plebe Summer. So you could bring that stuff on I-Day--and enjoy dragging it around in your big white bag--or you could have your parents bring it for you during Parents Weekend. You'll make it easier on yourself by bringing less on I-Day, especially if you end up in one of those companies on fourth deck.

Now, if you play a varsity sport that requires equipment and has practice over the summer, or if you're really into Intramural Soccer, you should bring equipment for your sport. You'll have to carry it around during I-Day, but there isn't any other choice.

You don't need mostly white running shoes. I bought some for my plebe summer and I was one of the only plebes who had them. Just bring shoes that are durable and great for running. THAT is what is most important because believe me... they are going to go through A LOT. Just be smart when you buy shoes so nothing super flashy (ie: not lime green/hot pink) and you should be just fine. Good luck.

DD is ordering the Nike Free in custom colors (... mostly white). She already runs in a colorful pair, and knows that they fit. The customizing adds to the price, obviously, but you get exactly what you want.

Search on "NIKEiD Running Shoes," or go here:

I ordered these from New Balance. I am reasonably sure that this is what Plebes are issued on I-Day. Take a look here or here or here. Anyway, you get the picture. If you are worried about getting the "right" thing and don't want to stand out, they might be a good choice.

That's from 2004, 9 years ago. I think that they are discontinued, and regardless, judging from the pictures on Facebook, not the current issue. See the post above and the pictures from I-Day 2012 for the updated model.

Those are not the shoes you're looking for.

Those are the issued cross trainers. They are not running shoes. Cross trainers are worn with Whiteworks Echo and PE gear. They cannot be worn with PT gear. The only "running" done in those shoes over the summer is chopping.

990s were the issued running shoes last summer. I never wore them, they were rather bad. I personally would not recommend them, but there were a few people who liked them.

And, of course, USNA can always decide to switch up the shoe models. I don't think we got the same shoes 2015 did.

Really, everybody. The color of the shoe does not matter. Unless it's covered with rainbow sparkles and has little wings on the back, no one will notice and no one will care.

Detailers will care a lot more about injuries and the medical chits they have to process for each injury. Buy good quality shoes that will protect from shin splints and the like for the duration of the summer. Do not worry about the color.
