My son is driving out to the Springs from Nebraska in order to see the campus. He has an appointment for the Class of 2017. This is his spring break and as I discovered it was also spring break at the academy. Admissions told me on the phone his only choice would be a self guided tour. I was just wondering if any cadet, faculty member, or administrator would be willing to take 30 mins or so and visit with him and answer questions on Friday 3-29? He has appointments to Annapolis and West Point and I just want him to make an informative decision. Our family has no military connection so it is all new to us. His appointment just came and the entire month of April is booked so this is his one chance to see the beauty of the USAFA. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm flying back on the evening of the 29th, so I can give him a tour if he's available on Saturday the 30th. If not, I can ask around to see if anyone in my squad will still be here. The cadet wing doesn't have to be back at USAFA until 7pm on Sunday, so almost everyone will still be gone.

Congratulations on your son's appointments. Visiting the campus when it's empty might not be the best time but I hope Falcon girl can find someone that can show him around. My DD is sort of in the same boat but have other campuses besides the SA to consider. IMHO, an informed decision can be reached after narrowing it down to what specific niche an appointee wants to fill well after the four years that he/she spends at an SA. Of course, by now it's obvious that each branch of the service has their own specific missions and differences with regards to future deployment possibilities. AIr, land or sea? What kind of major to choose from and what equivalent civilian job opportunities are available in case they "five and dive" or be a "lifer" and serve for 20+ years.
We are touring the different campuses not just to look at the buildings and location but to get a feel of how cadets are in their environment. What lies outside the campus and what cadets do when granted leave on weekends?
Good luck and hopefully someone from USAFA takes the time to show him around and convince him of how wonderful "camp USAFA" is. At any rate, any of the three SAs are excellent and are where some of America's brightest kids attend and eventually serve. He can't go wrong with any.

Thanks Cadet Spencer for the USAFA tour!

My son recently visited the academy during both his spring break and the USAFA spring break. After calling admissions, they told me nobody would be able to visit with my son and that he had to take a self-guided tour. After posting my problem on this forum, the problem was solved and a cadet that was not going home for spring break volunteered his time to take my son around and answer questions. He went above and beyond the call of duty. A one hour request was soon a three hour personal tour! Thanks Spencer from our entire family. The USAFA is now a definite possibility, will visit Annapolis next week!

I'm visiting April 8th and 9th and am having a cadet tour on each day, are any cadets available to escort me around the campus following one of the tours?

I think you will already have a cadet giving you a tour. Is there something you want to see that you don't think they will show you?

Glad it went well. I heard that the weather was superb. Sunny, 68 F, jet blue skies with the front range as a backdrop. Annapolis will have a difficult time matching that. . .
